Highland County teams golf at sectionals; Mustangs, Sterling, Fauber qualify for district round

Highland County golfers competed at sectionals during the week of Sept. 23, with one team and two individuals advancing to the district tournament.

Those qualifying for districts include the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs boys team, along with individuals McClain junior Kaylin Sterling and Fairfield junior Brody Fauber.

The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs advanced to districts with a sectional runner-up finish Tuesday, Sept. 24 at the Jaycees Golf Course.

The Mustangs, who finished with a team score of 323, were led by senior Saxen Wilkin, who tied for sixth as an individual with a 79 (40, 39). Also earning a top 10 individual finish was LC senior Braedon West, who shot an 80 (40, 40).

Also advancing to districts for LC were sophomore Aiden Bene (40, 42) and freshman Nolan Wilkin (42, 40), both of whom shot an 82, and freshman Jackson West with a score of 91 (45, 46).

In the Div. I Southeast District Girls Sectional held Monday, Sept. 23 at the Jaycees Golf Club, Sterling qualified as an individual with the fifth-highest individual score for golfers not a qualifying team (top five teams and top five other individuals advance). Sterling had a score of 96 (48, 48), as she tied for 10th overall.

On Wednesday, Sept. 25 in the Division III Southeast District Boys Sectional at the Jaycees Golf Course, Fauber was the fifth-highest individual not on a qualifying team, shooting an 88 (49, 39) for 16th place.

Fauber will be golfing in the district round at the Lucasville Elks on Monday, Sept. 30. Sterling will compete in the district tournament at Oct. 9 at EagleSticks Golf Club. The Mustangs will golf at the Crown Hill district tournament Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 9 a.m.  

In other sectional results:

As a team, the Hillsboro Lady Indians finished 11th with a score of 460 at the the Div. I Southeast District Girls Sectional at the Jaycees. Their best finisher was Emma Yochum, who tied for 27th with a score of 109. Other results for Hillsboro were: Blake Herdman 114, Rylea Scarberry 116, Amani Cumberland 121 and Halle Jones 126.

McClain was 12th as a team. Aside from Sterling, individual finishes were: Abbie Lovett 116, Reese Roble 119, Hailey Cornett 129 and Kallie Posey 132.

The McClain Tigers finished 10th at the Jaycees sectional with a score of 359. Their low scorer was sophomore Carter Nelson with a score of 82 (43, 39), tied for 16th overall.

Other scores for McClain were: Connor Chandler 83, Alex Perie 91, Carson Chandler 103 and Jeremy Webb 107.

In the Division III Girls Sectional held Sept. 23 at Buckeye Hills, Fairfield finished eighth with a team score of 455, and Lynchburg-Clay was ninth with a score of 484.

The Lady Lions were led by freshman Kelsie Crowder, who shot a 96 (49, 47) to tie for 16th place. Lynchburg-Clay’s low scorer was sophomore Willow Smith, who tied for 31st with a score of 108 (56, 52).

Other FHS scores include: Makayla Brown 105, Emmy Caudill 119, Hadley Weddel 135 and Allison Pavey 136.

The Lady Mustangs’ finishes were: Kira Stratton 118, Libby Watson 123 and Savannah Bell 135.

In the Div. III Boys Sectional at the Jaycees, the Fairfield Lions were seventh with a score of 383, and Whiteoak finished eighth at 391.

Aside from Fauber, FHS scores were Otis Cockerill 96, Van Bennington 97, Blaine Fauber 103 and Caleb Barrera 114.

Whiteoak’s low scorer was sophomore Charlie Starks, who shot a 90 (48, 42) for 17th place.

WHS scores also included Carson Hart 97, Zander Roades 100, Keian Moon-Stone 104 and Camron Storms 108.

(Note: Hillsboro boys have not golfed yet, as their Div. I sectional tournament is scheduled to take place Sept. 30.)
