This past Friday night saw the start of the 2024-25 girls high school basketball season for the Hillsboro Lady Indians and the McClain Lady Tigers. Both teams played away from their home courts, with MHS winning at Paint Valley and HHS falling to Western Brown.

The two teams were the only two teams in Highland County to play on Friday, but the rest of the girls teams start their season Monday night as Lynchburg-Clay hosts Peebles, Whiteoak hosts Manchester and Fairfield will travel to West Union. McClain is also scheduled to play on the road Monday at Fayetteville.

This week will also be the start of the boys high school basketball season Friday, Nov. 29, as the day after Thanksgiving brings Highland County two games, with the Hillsboro Indians traveling to Wilmington in a non-conference game, and the Whiteoak Wildcats are scheduled to host the Ripley Blue Jays.

The rest of the boys basketball teams will start the week of Dec. 2, and then it is pedal to the metal for the remainder of the winter.

• STANDOUT PERFORMANCES

This past Friday night at Western Brown, Hillsboro sophomore Tylee Davis finished with 25 points, her career-high. Davis finished the season opener with a double-double, as she also had 10 rebounds. As a freshman, Davis’ top scoring game was a 17-point performance on Dec. 6, 2023 vs. Miami Trace.

The McClain Lady Tigers opened their 2024-25 season with a 42-34 win at Paint Valley, starting the season at 1-0. McClain’s first three games of the season will be on the road.

In McClain’s game at PVHS, Paint Valley junior Karris Dye led the Lady Bearcats with 17 points.

• A LOOK AHEAD

Besides the four Monday games mentioned earlier, Wednesday for Highland County has a varsity-only game between McClain at Fairfield with a 6 p.m. start in girls basketball.

Also on Wednesday, the Lady Indians will host  Goshen for their first home game of the season. Goshen has eight of the players returning from their roster that finished 20-5 last season. This season, GHS has two seniors, five juniors, four sophomores and one freshman on their roster. Last season GHS defeated HHS, 80-66.

On Friday, the Hillsboro Indians travel to Wilmington in a non-conference contest. Last season at Hillsboro, the Indians defeated the Hurricane, 66-52, a game where Tate Davis led HHS with 23 points. The only other returning player from HHS who scored in that win last season is Jack Howland, who as a freshman scored 11 points in the victory from a season ago.

Also on Friday and Saturday the Whiteoak Wildcats are scheduled to host back-to-back regular-season games against Ripley in SHAC action on Friday followed by a Saturday non-conference game vs. East Clinton. WHS has three seniors this season, along with three juniors, four sophomores and a freshman listed on their varsity roster.
