The McClain Tigers saw their overall record drop to 1-8 on the season after losing a non-conference game to the visiting Adena Warriors, 50-27 Wednesday night in Greenfield.
Offense was at a minimum again, and the second half was the difference in the game when the Tigers managed to score only 10 points over those last two quarters for a second straight game.
Things didn’t start well for McClain when they found themselves trailing 13-4 after one period of play. But the Tigers got things going some offensively in the second period and outscored Adena 13-11 and trailed by seven points at the half, 24-17.
The three-ball was the big booster for McClain in the frame when Michael Noszka Jr., Seth Weller and Jordan Bell all connected from behind the line, and senior post-player Andrew Potts also added four points in the quarter and led the Tigers with six points at the break.
Adena senior Joedy Ater led all scorers at the half with a team-high 10, and he was the game’s leading scorer and only player to reach double figures with a team- and game-high 20 points.
The Warriors opened the third period with a 6-0 run and built a double-digit advantage 30-17 before Weller ended the Tigers’ scoring drought with a long three at the 3:06 mark, his second of the game.
Adena finished the frame on another little 8-4 run and extended their lead to 38-24 heading to the fourth.
Things didn’t get any better on the offensive end for McClain in the final period when they were outscored 12-3 by Adena, who rolled to the lopsided 50-27 victory, sending the Tigers to their seventh straight loss after a season-opening win over Paint Valley.
McClain was led in scoring by seniors Seth Weller and Andrew Potts, who tallied eight points each, followed by Jordan Bell, who added five. Rounding out the scoring for the Tigers was Michael Noszka Jr. with three, Riley Cummins with two and Jayden Allison with one.
McClain only went to the charity stripe twice the entire ball game where they made 1-of-2 free throws, while Adena attempted 10 foul shots in the contest converting five 3-point field goals for McClain: Weller 2, Noszka 1 and Bell with 1.
The Tigers’ next game will be Tuesday, Jan. 2 when they travel to Clinton-Massie for another non-league affair.
