McClain Tigers earn non-conference victory over Vinton County for 5th win of the season

Earning their fifth win of the season, the McClain Tigers won another game away from Highland County, this time defeating non-conference counterpart, the Vinton County Vikings, 11-9 Friday.

Early in the game, the Tigers took a 3-1 lead after the first inning was completed, then they added one run in the top of the second for a 4-1 lead. The Vikings added three runs in the bottom of the third, tying the score at 4-4.

After neither team scored a run in the fourth inning, McClain scored two runs in the top of the fifth, but the Vikings added four runs to their total in the bottom of the fifth for an 8-6 lead over McClain.

There was another scoreless inning in the sixth, but MHS rallied for a three-run top of the seventh. The Vikings tied the score at 9-9 in the bottom of the seventh, forcing extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, the Tigers took the lead for good with two runs crossing the plate.

The Tigers finished with 12 hits and committed seven errors. VCHS totaled nine hits and committed five errors.

Kaden Penwell finished 3-for-5 with three runs, a double, two RBI and two steals. Andrew Potts was 2-for-5 with two runs, three RBI and he had a steal.

Gavin Warren ended the game at 2-for-4 with a run. Also for MHS, Haydon Hice was 1-for-4 with four runs, one RBI and a steal. Jayden Allison was 1-for-4 with two RBI, and Cohen Six went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Seth Weller was also 1-for-4 with an RBI and a steal, while Tanner Dalton went 1-for-4 with a run and a steal.

Eli Douglas was the winning pitcher, throwing two innings of relief, allowing no runs on one hit and one walk, with two strikeouts. 

Kaden Penwell pitched three innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

SJ Adkins pitched three innings for MHS, allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

The win improved the Tigers to 5-1-1 overall on season.
