McClain baseball defeats Southeastern, falls to Blue Lions
Playing away from Greenfield their past two games, the McClain Tigers defeated the Southeastern Panthers and fell to the Washington Blue Lions.
In their non-conference win on Thursday, April 2, the Tigers, at VA Memorial Stadium, defeated Southeastern by a 13-7 score.
MHS trailed 4-0 after the first inning where SEHS was the home team, but cut the deficit to one run with a three-run third for a 4-3 score. MHS took the lead with another three-run inning, this time in the top of the fourth for a 6-4 advantage.
SEHS added a run to their overall total in the bottom of the fifth for a 6-5 McClain lead, only to see the Tigers break out for seven runs in the top of the sixth for a 13-7 score as SEHS scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Neither team scored runs in the seventh.
McClain finished the game with 14 hits and they committed four errors, while Southeastern had seven hits and committed five errors.
Two MHS players had three hits each, with Seth Weller going 3-for-5 with three runs, one RBI and one steal.
Kaden Penwell finished 3-for-4 with two runs, one RBI, one walk and one of his hits was a triple.
Cohen Six finished 2-for-3 with one RBI, one walk and he was hit by a pitch. Benny Vangundy finished 2-for-2 with three runs and two walks.
The Tigers also had one hit each from Andrew Potts (one run, three RBI), Jayden Allison, Owen Sykes (one run, one walk) and Eli Douglas (two runs, two RBI).
Six was the winning pitcher for the Tigers , pitching five innings, as he allowed five hits, five runs (none earned), three walks, two wild pitches and he struck out three batters. Six threw 79 pitches, 45 for strikes.
Easton Ary pitched two innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits, no walks, one wild pitch, one hit batter, all while striking out four batters.
The win leaves MHS with a 3-4 overall record.

On Wednesday, April 3, the Tigers lost to the Washington Blue Lions, 9-1 in a Frontier Athletic Conference contest.
McClain’s lone run crossed home plate in the bottom of the first inning. Washington scored one run in the bottom of the first, followed with a three-run second, four-run third and two runs in the fifth.
Washington finished with 11 hits and no errors, while McClain totaled five hits and two errors.
For MHS, five players each had one hit from Weller, Penwell (one RBI, double), Potts, Allison and Vangundy. Douglas scored one run and had a walk, and Sykes was hit by a pitch.
Penwell was charged with the pitching loss, where he struck out seven batters, allowing seven earned runs in five innings. Ary pitched one inning of relief, striking out two.
