After posting a big 13-5 victory over Washington on the road Wednesday night, the McClain varsity softball team returned home Thursday and dropped a 9-1 decision to visiting Miami Trace on Daryle Unger Field.

Vivian Dennis got the win at Washington with a complete game performance in a game the Lady Tigers fell behind 5-2 early before coming alive in the middle and later innings to post the Frontier Athletic Conference victory.

Miami Trace scored a couple of runs in the second inning and added two more in the third off of McClain starting pitcher Gracie Bowers for an early 4-0 lead. That would be all the offense the Lady Panthers needed to give their freshman starting pitcher Kaylee Everhart, who kept the Lady Tigers bats at bay the entire game, surrendering just a single run in the sixth inning.

Miami Trace added a couple of insurance runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to pick up an important FAC win.

McClain collected only four hits in the game, one each by Harley Peabody, Leah Lovett, Allie Flowers and Kenedi Wise. Flowers had the only extra-base hit for the Lady Tigers a double and Peabody scored the lone McClain run.

“I guess it’s our in-experience that’s showing now,” McClain head coach Ed Bolender said after the game. “We have to learn to come out and play every game.

“Maybe we were feeling too good about our win at Washington last night but today we just didn’t compete, especially at the plate.

“We have to do a better job of competing every pitch both offensively and defensively and if we do that we play pretty well in stretches, but when we don’t this is the end result,” Bolender continued. “We’ve got to make some adjustments and learn from our mistakes and try to bounce back from this one before we play Chillicothe tomorrow night.”
