Lions take down Highland County counterpart McClain
Saturday saw the Fairfield Lions earn a non-conference win over Highland County counterpart the McClain Tigers by a 9-2 score, as the Lions collected nine hits in the win to help lead them to the non-conference victory.
Fairfield held the lead early on as they scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, then after scoreless innings for the second, third and fourth, it was the fifth inning that changed the landscape of the game.
McClain tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the fifth, but the Lions responded with a seven-run bottom of the fifth, taking an 8-1 lead. FHS added a run in the bottom of the sixth, and the Tigers did the same in the top of the seventh.
The visiting Tigers collected six hits and committed two errors, while FHS finished with their nine hits and three errors.
Dow Moon finished the game at 2-for-3 with two runs, one RBI and a walk. Corbin Willey went 2-for-3 with one run, one RBI and a walk. Landry Hattan was 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
Gabe Fouch finished 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and a walk. Teammate Elijah Humphreys was 1-for-1, while Wyatt Willey forced a walk. Wyatt Collins scored a run and walked once, and Owen Larrick was also 1-for-1, and Brandon Ludwick finished 1-for-1 with a run and RBI.
Willey and Fouch each hit a double, Larrick was hit by a pitch, and Fouch had a steal.
Fouch — who faced 23 batters — was the winning pitcher as he pitched five innings, finishing the day with one earned run on five hits and one walk. Fouch collected 11 strikeouts as he totaled 95 pitches, 65 for strikes.
Zane Matthews pitched two innings where he allowed one earned run on one hit and one walk. Matthews struck out two batters, and in all he threw 35 pitches, 21 for strikes as he faced a total of nine batters.
For McClain, Haydon Hice was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a steal. Kaden Penwell was also 1-for-4, and Andrew Potts finished 1-for-3 with a run and RBI as he hit a home run, and he was also hit by a pitch.
Eli Douglas forced a walk, Seth Weller was 2-for-3 with a steal, and Gavin Warren went 1-for-2 with a run, two steals and a walk.
On Monday, the Lions lost to the South Webster Jeeps, 12-0 in non-conference action, moving to 5-2 overall this season.
