    Winners have been announced in the 10th annual Spring Invitational Area Artist Exhibition and Competition sponsored by Southern State Community College and the Appalachian Gateway Center exhibits committee. The exhibit was on display May 6-28 at the college's South Campus in Fincastle. An artists' reception was held May 13.

    Mother Nature recently gave us more proof of how powerful she really is. Depending on your location, the May 21 weekend saw localized heavy rains, hail, and strong winds in the area. There was some light to moderate damage in certain areas, but fortunately the damage was not widespread. Last week saw a return of warmer temperatures that has allowed for improved crop development and a return to the fields to allow farmers to make progress towards the completion of spring planting.

        Summer is just around the corner, and Ohio’s hot summer weather and high humidity can pose a health risk for seniors. Some risk factors may include chronic illness such as heart disease, hypertension, obesity, diabetes or lung disease; poor physical conditioning; high environmental temperature and humidity, especially for sustained periods of time; poor ventilation and cooling; poor fluid intake; alcohol use; inability to access, even for temporary periods of the day, an air-conditioned location.
