Highland County Democrats celebrated Thanksgiving, the all-American holiday, with giving and thanks. Twenty-six local families received a bountiful, ready-to-prepare meal that included the turkey, dressing, canned sweet potatoes, corn, green beans, dinner rolls, russet potatoes, sweet potatoes and, of course, pumpkin pie.
Joyce Ford, chairman of this year’s upbeat enterprise says, “It warms my heart that we can help families. The stories they share with us are very touching, and their appreciation is so sincere. But, we’re Democrats. We help people. That’s what we do. Democratic Party members donated over $700 to cover the full cost of all the meals.”
Carolyn Goins organized the event for the first time last year and is an enthusiastic supporter of what is becoming a new tradition. She says, “Recipients were recommended by Highland County Community Action. The response last year was so positive, we all wanted to do it again. This is a giving community, neighbors helping neighbors, sharing with neighbors, and we’re part of that. We just want to do all we can so our hungry neighbors will have a good Thanksgiving.”
Dinah Phillips chairs the Highland County Democrats. She says, “The Democratic Party is not just about elections and politics. We are involved with the community all the time. Sharing what we have, looking for ways to make life better for all of us, it’s how we give back. This was a project we all supported, so it came together quickly, and it has been gratifying to see the results.”
The entire committee included Pam Limes, Charlotte Harbut, Linda Griffith, Jolene Walker, Penny Kincaid and Debra McNutt. The group met Monday morning at Democratic Headquarters to fill big tote bags with all the trimmings of the day, with “extra” for those with bigger families.
Recipients picked up their well-filled bags from Democratic headquarters Monday afternoon, with smiles and the certainty of a fine holiday dinner.
