On Friday January 29, 2010 at 10:59 am, the Highland County Sheriff's Office received a call of an injured child at a residence located at 12867 South St. in the Community of Rainsboro in Paint Township. The Paint Creek Joint EMS/ Fire District, the Hillsboro Fire and Rescue along with deputies and detectives from the Highland County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, it was discovered that a 9 year old male was suffering from severe trauma, burn and impact injuries as a result of an explosion that occurred inside the residence.

After delaying an initial request for a .4-mill tax levy for the Ohio State University/Highland County Extension last week, the Highland County Board of Commissioners approved a .45-mill levy for the agency for the May 4 primary election. Commissioners had agreed to hold off on an initial resolution after Extension Director Rose Fisher Merkowitz said the .4-mill levy wouldn't raise sufficient funds. On Wednesday, commissioners voted 2-0 in favor of sending the .45-mill levy to voters.

A new standing procedural order regarding the release of prisoners has been placed in the Highland County Clerk of Courts Office, following an incident on Saturday, Jan. 16. An inmate at the Highland County Justice Center was released after an own recognizance bond was signed by Highland County Clerk of Courts Paulette Donley, rather than by a judge, prompting Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss to issue the standing order.

The National Weather Service has posted a hazardous weather forecast for southwest Ohio, including Highland County. A cold front is expected to bring up to an inch of snow early Thursday morning. The chance of precipitation is 70 percent. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

On Sunday, Feb. 7, from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., the Greenfield Historical Society is holding their second Sunday Dinner at the Grain and Hay Building, McArthur Way and Jefferson Street in Greenfield. The cost is $10 and includes pork loin, cheesy potatoes, marinated beans, coleslaw, rolls, dessert, and drinks. No reservations are required. The first dinner in January was a complete success and was sold out before 1. Once again, there will be a wait staff to serve the dinner, and you will have real plats and silverware to eat from. There will be no take-outs, however.
