    Highland County Alternative School to close

    The Highland County Alternative School will be closed at the end of the school year as a cost-savings measure for the three school districts that currently support its services. However, according to Hillsboro Superintendent Rick Earley, internal programming will be available for the students who need alternative education.

    Collins to be acting prosecutor; Henry resigns to accept position with AG's office
    The Highland County Board of Commissioners will not be appointing an interim prosecutor following the May 31 retirement of Jim Grandey. However, Assistant Highland County Prosecutor Anneka Collins will have the designation as "acting prosecutor."
    Commission President Shane Wilkin, who is also a Highland County Republican Party Central Committee member, said that, "We will be consistent with our previous actions of vacated offices. The duties are going to roll to Anneka."
    Wilkin said he and Collins met Friday to discuss the office. In addition to Grandey's retirement, Assistant Prosecutor David Henry will also be leaving after accepting a position with the Ohio Attorney General's Office.

    SOPA cancels Thunder in the Hills
    Despite efforts to make sure that the 24th annual Thunder in the Hills would take place this September at Rocky Fork Lake, organizers say the hydroplane race has been officially cancelled. 
    Race director Dean Davis told The Highland County Press on Thursday that the Southern Ohio Powerboat Association was unable to come up with the additional $12,000 needed to put on the event, which costs an estimated total of $30,000.

    SSCC votes to begin process of property acquisition for campus expansion WATCH THE VIDEO
    The Southern State Community College Board of Trustees has voted to authorize a search and acquisition of property for possible expansion, after hearing a report regarding a college-wide facility assessment that shows SSCC’s South Campus in Fincastle would need nearly $3 million in improvements just to “bring it up to 2011/2012 standards.”

    Highland County Press columnist and 700 WLW Radio talk show host Eric “The Bulldog” Deters will be the guest speaker at the Monday, Aug. 1 meeting of the Highland County TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party at the Colony Theatre in uptown Hillsboro, said Highland County TEA Party President Ken Ludwick.

    Highland County under tornado watch

    Highland County has been placed on a tornado watch, according to the National Weather Service. 

    The watch was put into effect at 1:55 p.m. Wednesday and will be in effect until 9 p.m. Highland County is also under a hazardous weather outlook alert. Repeated thunderstorms occurring also create the potential for flooding, according to the NWS website.

    Amish child drowns in Adams County community
    ADAMS COUNTY - An Adams County child has died after being pulled from a stream, located in an Amish community.
     According to WLWT News 5, "Deputies said 4-year-old Mahlon Yutzey had disappeared from a home at 6005 Unity Road shortly before noon. His mother went searching for him and found him facedown in a stream."

    Brown County soldier killed in Afghanistan
    A Brown County soldier has been killed while serving in Afghanistan.
      Seth Blevins, of Sardinia, according to the Eastern Local Schools website, was killed. Blevins was a 2008 graduate from Eastern Local Schools, and was serving in the U.S. Army.

    On Tuesday, May 24, Congressman Mike Turner announced that Clinton County has received the designation as a Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone) in the Small Business Administration's program.     Woman files complaint on Hillsboro mayoral candidate
    HCSO Officer Scott Cooper explained to Hastings and West that both parties needed to cease contact with one another to prevent any further problems. The officer said if any further problems arise, the sheriff's office would pursue criminal charges.
