The Southern State Community College Board of Trustees will meet 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 25, 2011, in Room 149 on the college’s Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro. The meeting, which had originally been scheduled for May 11, is open to the public.

Spring is an exciting time at the library. We're planning for Summer Reading Adventure and all the fun summer programs that are coming. The summer theme is "One World …­ Many Stories." A memorial scholarship fund is being established in honor of Bill Horne who faithfully served Southern State Community College for more than 25 years and was consistently recognized for his outstanding instruction, academic leadership, dedication and service.

A Hillsboro man indicted on a charge of first-degree felony aggravated robbery in connection with an armed robbery at the Beechwood Food Mart in January pleaded guilty Thursday, and was sentenced to five years in prison.
  Larry W. Smith, 41, told the court that he had never been in jail before he made a "stupid" mistake in robbing the grocery store with a BB gun.

Eagles Riders of the Hillsboro Eagles Aerie 1161 conducted a Poker Run with proceeds benefiting Hospice of Hope Ohio Valley. 30-35 bikers participated in the event.

A Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Great Strides walk/run will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at Southern State Community College’s Fayette Campus, 1270 U.S. Route 62 SW, Washington C.H. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and two routes will be available: a 5K (3.1 miles) route and a 10K (6.2 mile) route.

Consider this: If there were not an Independent candidate in the November general election (fortunately, there is), a scant 4 percent (295/6666) of the city’s population would have elected the next mayor. Or, if you prefer, a mere 9 percent of possible voters (460 total votes cast, divided by 4,709 potential voters) would have determined the city’s next mayor. The candidates worked too hard for such a dismal representation of potential voters.
