Ohio Secretary of State’s Office, Press Release

Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose announced Tuesday the formal convening of Ohio’s 56th Electoral College on Tuesday, Dec. 17 in the Senate Chamber of the Ohio Statehouse.

Based on the most recent U.S. census data, Ohio will cast 17 electoral votes for President and Vice President of the United States, representing each Ohio congressional district and two U.S. Senate seats.

“The United States Constitution is the strongest political document in history, and this important constitutional process continues to stand the test of time,” said Secretary LaRose. “Our nation has elected its president through the Electoral College for 237 years, and Ohio first contributed its voice and votes to that roll call of the states with the election of Thomas Jefferson in 1804. This year, 17 citizens will travel to the Statehouse in Columbus to award Ohio’s electoral votes to Donald J. Trump for President of the United States and J.D. Vance for Vice President.”

Both major political parties selected and nominated a slate of 17 electors that would be called to participate in the Electoral College based on the majority vote of the state.

Since the Trump-Vance ticket won Ohio’s majority vote, the electors designated by the Ohio Republican Party will be invited by the Secretary of State to formally meet on Dec. 17 at the Statehouse to participate in the Electoral College process. On this day, electors across the United States will meet in their respective states to cast their votes for President and Vice President on separate ballots.

Each state’s electors’ votes are recorded on a Certificate of Vote, which is prepared at the meeting by the electors. The Certificate of Vote is sent to the United States Congress, where the votes are counted, and to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), as part of the official records of the Presidential election. Each state also keeps one set for its permanent records and creates three backup sets.
