Brothers who graduate from McClain High School in May have both turned their Eagle Scout projects into something to benefit the students and community of the elementary they attended.

Nicolas and Nathan Alvarez went to Rainsboro for their elementary years, and now the school boasts a wooden bench, crafted by Nathan, and a little free library, made by Nicolas.

The brothers completed the projects earlier in the school year as the feathers in their Boy Scout caps — to earn their Eagle Scout rank.

According to Nicolas, his little free library is “a way for the students of Rainsboro and the entire community to be encouraged to read and have fun.” And how a little free library works is simple, he said. If you take a book, you leave a book.

“It’s a good way for children to learn the way of sharing,” he said.

Nicolas’ little free library is situated right near the playground at Rainsboro Elementary, a spot he said that was chosen with the help of principal Maggie Lyons so that children on the playground for recess would have easy access to the books.

Nathan Alvarez built a sturdy and safe bench near the playground for not just students, but anyone needing a place to sit down. The wooden bench bears a small plaque with his name, troop number and the year it was built. Nicolas’ little free library also bears a small plaque with that information.

Nathan noted that the whole of the project, from start to finish, was documented as is required for an Eagle Scout project.

The brothers each accomplished their projects with the help of others, including one another, fellow members of Boy Scout Troop 5316, parents Guillermo and Thamar Alvarez, Lyons, Rainsboro Elementary and the community, Hillsboro Christian Academy, and Hillsboro Elks. Whether it was money, time, materials, or just encouragement, the brothers understand that they achieved their Eagle Scout ranks because they were supported.

“It is such a pleasure to have Rainsboro students give back to the school and community,” Lyons said. “Nathan and Nick Alvarez completed their Scout projects with compassion and enthusiasm. These two projects are a great asset to our Rainsboro school and community. Thank you fellow students.”
