National Honor Society, Press Release

Chosen from nearly 17,000 applicants, the National Honor Society (NHS) is awarding $2 million in scholarships to 600 NHS students. The program is supported by NHS’s parent organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, which also administers the National Association of Student Councils.

“Each winner has gone above and beyond to excel academically and lift up their communities through selfless service and leadership,” said NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe. “Their actions today exemplify the incredible leaders they are, and I can’t wait to see what they accomplish.”

The scholarships recognize students who exemplify the four pillars of NHS membership: scholarship, service, leadership and character. One national winner will receive $25,000 while four others will receive $10,625 for embodying each pillar at a gala on April 5. In addition, 20 finalists each earn $5,625 scholarships and 575 semifinalists receive $3,200 scholarships.

One of the top 25 finalists is Palash Kapoor, a student at Sycamore High School in Cincinnati.

Kapoor is an ambassador for Youth & Peace in Action, working to expand peace education globally and advocate for peace education funding. He also serves more than 5,500 students as an Ohio DECA state officer. Fascinated by the impact businesses have on society, Kapoor has published research on corporate social responsibility.

In honor of his grandfather, he spearheaded a team to fundraise more than $50,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and now mentors local fundraising teams. At school, he serves on the Superintendent Advisory Council and is president of “BizTech” club and NHS.

A Harvard Book Award recipient, Rotary Student of the Year and DECA Glass winner, Kapoor spends his free time rapping on social topics, vlogging and playing chess. In the future, he plans to merge his interests in business, technology, and peacebuilding.

"Winning the scholarship has given me the motivation to continue to dream big and realize my goals while finding innovative ways to make an impact on my community,” said Kapoor.

“Palash has gone above and beyond to excel academically and lift up his community through selfless service and leadership,” said NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe. “His actions today exemplify the incredible leader he is, and I can’t wait to see what he accomplishes."

Along with other students from Ohio, there were two local students named among the 575 semifinalists:

• Avery Teeters of Leesburg (Fairfield High School); and

• Antoinette Grimes of Sardinia (Eastern High School).
