Father Mike Paraniuk of St. Mary Catholic Church in Hillsboro, St. Benignus Catholic Church in Greenfield, Saint Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Peebles and Holy Trinity Catholic Church in West Union is the 2023 recipient of the Sam Levine Memorial Award for excellence in broadcasting.

Levine founded the Cleveland Kegler, a bowling newspaper, in 1937. He was its editor and publisher until his death. He broadcasted bowling tournaments for two decades.

"This award for promoting bowling broadcasting has never been given to a bowling radio announcer," Fr. Paraniuk said. "They were amazed at that fact.

"One member asked incredulously, 'How do you announce a bowling tournament on the radio?'

"I told him that I have watched bowling announcers on TV for 62 years. I learned from the best since I was 10. It was a great experience to be around the owners of bowling centers throughout Ohio who make it possible for the bowlers and broadcasters to do what we do. I am deeply honored to receive this award."
