Wilmington man sentenced to prison in connection with mother's shooting death

Kyler L. Whitt, 33, of Wilmington has been sentenced to a term of imprisonment following his conviction for voluntary manslaughter, unlawful possession of a dangerous ordnance, receiving stolen property and tampering with evidence.
The case began April 15 when the Wilmington Police Department Dispatch Center received a 911 call reporting a shooting. Officers and emergency personnel responded to the scene, where the subsequent investigation revealed that Whitt had allegedly fatally shot his mother inside the residence.
The investigation was conducted by the Wilmington Police Department - Detective Division. The case was later presented to the Clinton County Prosecutor’s Office for review and prosecution.
Whitt pleaded guilty to the above charges, as well as to a firearm specification. The Clinton County Common Pleas Court imposed the following sentences:
• Count one, voluntary manslaughter (F1): Indefinite prison term of not less than 11 years and not more than 16.5 years; firearm specification: mandatory three years, to be served consecutively.
• Count two, unlawful possession of a dangerous ordnance (F5): 12 months, consecutive.
• Count three, receiving stolen property (F4): 18 months, consecutive.
• Count four, tampering with evidence (F3): 36 months, consecutive.
The Court ordered all counts and specifications to be served consecutively, resulting in a total aggregate indefinite prison term of not less than 19.5 years and not more than 25 years.
Following sentencing, Whitt was remanded to the custody of the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office for transfer to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction to begin serving his sentence immediately.
