MOWRYSTOWN — On a soggy Monday, the Whiteoak Wildcats gained hits and runs when they needed them the most, defeating Southern Hills League counterpart Eastern Brown, 5-3 at WHS.
Eastern scored twice in the top of the first, but a home run over the left field fence by Luke Taggert tied the game in the first at two.
Eastern came back to regain a one-run lead in the top of the third, but again, the Wildcats were clutch, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the same inning off a two-out double by Jesse Bradds. In the sixth, Michael Carraher hit a two-RBI triple with two outs, adding one more run to keep the lead for good.
The win lifts the Wildcats back to .500, standing at 8-8 overall.
WHS sophomore Gage Carraher was the winning pitcher for the Wildcats. Carraher (3-4) pitched seven innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits and five walks. The sophomore finished with nine strikeouts.
At the plate for WHS, Taggert led with a 2-for-4 day with two RBIs and one run. Michael Carraher, Bradds and Wes Stratton each had one hit for WHS. Carraher had a triple, and Stratton hit a double. For the game, the Wildcats had three extra base hits.
"We had clutch hitting against Eastern," WHS head coach Chris Veidt said. "We turned a big 1-4-3 double play in the seventh for the first two outs of the inning.
"Wes (Stratton) had a nice all-around game for us. Gage threw the ball very well and had good composure in some tight situations."
WHS will play again on Wednesday as they host the Georgetown G-Men at 5 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
