MOWRYSTOWN — It was shutout baseball in Mowrystown Wednesday evening. Gaining five hits and four runs, the Whiteoak Wildcats moved closer to a .500 mark on the season, defeating the Blanchester Wildcats 4-0.
Whiteoak scored in the later innings, adding runs to its scoreboard during the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
The game was tied at zero for the first three and a half innings, but WHS put two runs on the board in the fourth and added one run in each of the next two innings for the non-league win.
Ben Barnett and Ethan Eyre each had one hit against Blanchester. Both senior players reached the bases on doubles. Barnett also had one RBI.
Luke Taggert also gained a base hit, along with scoring two runs. Jesse Bradds and Michael Carraher each had one hit and one RBI.
"Our defense is playing well. We turned a big 4-6-3 double play in the first inning, and a huge pickoff in the fifth, to get us out of trouble," WHS head coach Chris Veidt said. "Mike Carraher's clutch two-out RBI for us in the fourth, after some base running mistakes was big. Jesse Bradds' clutch RBI single in the sixth was huge for some much-needed insurance."
The win went to freshman Gage Carraher. Carraher improved his record to 5-2 on the season, pitching the full seven innings. The freshman hurler allowed five hits and five walks and no runs. Carraher finished with six strikeouts.
"Gage made some nice adjustments on the mound after a rough first inning," Veidt said. "As usual, he got stronger as the game progressed."
The win lifts WHS to 12-13 overall.
"We saw their (Blanchester's) best pitchers," Veidt said. "It was a good test. We are peaking at the right time, heading into next week's tournament play."
