Earlier this month, 19 Hillsboro High School students had the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica for nine days. 

I woke up the morning of June 18 with a surprising thought. The Hillsboro High School class of 1968, of which I am a member, had its 55th reunion the previous evening, June 17 at the Orpheum in uptown Hillsboro. The thought was this: How are you supposed to feel when your 55th reunion is now in the rearview mirror? Old? Over the hill? Washed up?  

  Over $1.44 million has been awarded to Hillsboro for the construction of the Rails to Trails Community Trail in 2026. The project will create a walking and bicycling trail on the abandoned railroad bed and a sidewalk on West Main Street between the trailhead and Taylor Court.

We should never forget that very brave people made the world what it is today.  We may not think it is perfect, but it is far closer to perfection than defeat in World War II would have brought us. Our debt to those who sacrificed their lives and their families is beyond our ability to pay.

The Wilmington Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating a traffic crash in Highland County that resulted in one fatality. The crash occurred on Oldaker Road at approximately 5 a.m. Sunday, June 4.

A convoy of semis passed through Hillsboro Friday, June 2 en route to the Lake View Loft on Jones Road in support of a fundraiser for Aralyn Slack.

This past week’s mail brought a couple of interesting items. First off, while I was anticipating the arrival of a new gas cap for my wife’s Jeep Compass to correct an emissions issue, the package that arrived felt more like a hardcover book than a Jeep gas cap. Much to my surprise, I received a copy of Dr. Robert T. Sharp’s new book, “The Bull in the Darkness and the One-Eyed Dog,” a followup to his well-received classic, “No Dogs in Heaven? Scenes from the Life of a Country Veterinarian.”

Early runs scored by the Unioto Lady Shermans put the Hillsboro Indians down early, and they were not able to recover, falling in the Division II SE District Finals Thursday by a 6-2 score, ending the most successful Hillsboro season in two decades.

He was sitting there in the white rocking chair on the front porch at the Cracker Barrel in Cookeville, Tenn. about 1 p.m. on May 16 of this year. That is where he said he would be, and as always, he had done exactly what he said he would do. A small, unassuming old man, about 80 years old, baseball cap, blue T-shirt, with a nice blue and white striped dress shirt over it, open as if it were a light jacket. Jeans and sneakers completed the ensemble. No one would know he got shot up badly in Vietnam and was awarded the Silver Star.
