MOWRYSTOWN — In what Whiteoak head coach Chris Veidt described as a great baseball game, the Wildcats and Fayetteville Rockets battled in a game where a single run was scored. The Rockets were the team that scored the run, defeating WHS, 1-0 at Whiteoak High School, Tuesday.

The Wildcats were held to three hits, as they dropped their third Southern Hills League game of the season, falling to 0-3 in league play.

"We are behind the 8-ball league wise, but I believe we can make it up," Veidt said. "We've had a tough run to start the year, and people are going to beat up on each other. There is no doubt we are still a contender."

WHS are three-time defending SHL champions in Division II.

WHS sophomore pitcher Gage Carraher suffered another heartbreaking defeat on the mound. Carraher (0-2) pitched a one-hitter in seven innings, as the lone run that was scored was unearned. Carraher walked one and struck out 10 in 82 pitches.

In his first start of the season last week, the sophomore allowed just one earned run on one hit and seven walks. In two starts this season, Carraher has 20 strikeouts.

"Gage deserved a better fate. He was dominating today and very pitch efficient, Veidt said. "You look at his performances over two games, and it's hard to believe he is 0-2. Things will eventually even out for him."

Gaining hits for the Wildcats were Michael Carraher, Jesse Bradds and Smith, all singles. All three batters went 1-for-3.

The lone run scored by the Rockets was scored in the top of the sixth inning.

Peters (2-0) was the winning pitcher for Fayetteville. Peters allowed three hits, and walked one in seven innings. He struck out 14 batters.

"We had our chances offensively with the guys we want at the plate in clutch situations, and they just didn't work out today … that's baseball," Veidt said. "Good hitters fail 70 percent of the time. Peters had a lot to do with that failure. He was on his 'A' game."[[In-content Ad]]
