GREENFIELD — The McClain Tigers are set to face their toughest opponent of the season this Friday night when they face the Clinton-Massie Falcons.
CM has been on a tear as of late, winning their past three games by a combined score of 193-21 with consecutive 72-7 scores against the Hillsboro Indians and Miami Trace Panthers, and last week a 49-7 win over the London Red Raiders to improve to 3-0 in the South Central Ohio League and 4-2 overall this season.
The Falcons run the ball – that is their trademark – and last week they did it once again with three players rushing for over 100 yards each. CM totaled seven rushing touchdowns last week in the 49-7 win over the London Red Raiders. Earlier this season, MHS lost to LHS, 49-0. For their game last week, CM totaled 384 yards of rushing on 55 carries.
"They are strong as usual and probably have some of the best speed of any Clinton-Massie team we've seen," McClain head coach Randy Closson said. "They are talented at quarterback as well. Their running game is so good, they can use a play action pass to their advantage … they have a lot of offensive weapons."
Their defense this season has allowed just 77 points in '11.
"Massie's defense is strong and powerful. They have rock-solid linebackers and make great reads," Closson said. "Their secondary is one of the strongest we've seen this season."
Last week, the Tigers lost 26-0 to the Washington Blue Lions, and so far this SCOL slate they have losses to London, Madison-Plains and Washington to go to 0-3 in league games.
Though wins aren't showing up in the standings, the Tigers are a young team, looking to rebuild their program for the remainder of the season. They are starting a sophomore quarterback in sophomore Thomas Schrader and are using junior Jordan Goble in a variety of ways on the offense.
Junior running back Dillon East had a productive game last week, and the offensive line played one of its better games of the season against the Blue Lions.
"I thought the offensive line improved last week. We were able to give our quarterback a pocket, and they opened up some running lanes for the back," Closson said. "We just have to focus on us and what we are doing. This is a growing process, and if they come ready to work every day, give their best effort and we see improvement each week, that is all we can ask for."
