BAINBRIDGE — The Paint Valley Bearcats are looking for the "signature win" of the season. They have that opportunity this Friday night as it is their turn to take on the Adena Warrior rushing attack on the road in a Scioto Valley Conference matchup.
The Warriors have won all six times this season when they have stepped foot on the field with wins over McClain (31-0), East Clinton (35-12), Washington (20-13), Huntington (57-23), Zane Trace (35-7) and Southeastern (47-12).
Leading the way for the Warriors is running back Reid Hutchinson has rushed for nearly 1,500 yards this season. Also a dual threat is quarterback Kirk Yates.
"They (Adena) are who they are … a physical running team with a tremendous back for the past six or seven years," Paint Valley head coach Pete Hollon said. "The group they have right now is the best of the bunch in that span.
"Adena will also run the ball 95 percent of the time, but their play action pass is set up with their running game."
Hollon spoke about the Adena QB Yates and running back Hutchinson.
"Kirk (Yates) is a good player in his own right," he said. "He's a dual threat, but Adena believes in their system, and it works. They feed the ball to the tail back, and Hutchinson is fast-and-powerful. His step-and-go is incredible for our level of small school football. He's one of, if not the best running back I've seen in the past 25 years.
"When you aren't game planning for him, he's fun to watch."
The defense of the Bearcats won't change what they do as they have seen great improvement this season.
"We've made a lot of progress this season defense and we just need to keep improving this week," Hollon said. "We've been based on fundamentals since Aug. 1. We have to tackle well against Adena, and that is the most important thing for us defensively."
Hollon would like to see some improvement on some aspects of the offense.
"Offensively, we are a spread team, but we are a run-first team," Hollon said. "Our short passing game has let us down the past few weeks, and we need the catches for 4-5-6 yards. Last week, we were playing behind the sticks and it took a toll on us.
"We're just looking for that signature win, and this week we have that chance against an undefeated team."
