LEESBURG — On a night where $1,700 was raised for the Volley for a Cure game, the Fairfield Lady Lions and McClain Lady Tigers went the five-game distance with an electric crowd on hand to see the Lady Tigers come out on the winning side.

The first game went to the Lady Lions at 25-14, but MHS tied the match with a game-two win of 25-18. MHS went ahead 2-1 in the game count with a game-three win of 25-15, but the Lady Lions answered with a game-four win of 25-19.

"We had a lot of support tonight, and it was nice to have that home court support," FHS coach MaryBeth Hodson said. "It was nice everyone showed up for the girls."

McClain held off one final rally by the Lady Lions to win the fifth set 15-11 for their seventh match win of the season.

"We played well once we got into a good rotation," McClain coach Emma Gall said.

Though MHS left Leesburg with a match win, it was the host Lady Lions who won the first game by 11 points at 25-14.

FHS opened the game with a 3-0 start and improved to 4-1 with a point at the top of the net by Brenna Simmons. McClain answered with a point by Jenna Perie.

But the Lady Lions came back with an ace by Simmons, and following out-of-play hits and a point by Sydney Corzatt, the Lady Lions led 14-5.

Perie helped MHS get back at 17-8, but Fairfield's Whitney Hanenkrat forced MHS to hit the ball out of play with a powerful hit off a player of MHS.

An ace by Sasha Lawwell brought MHS within eight points of tying the score after Simmons and Logan Greene put the score at 21-12. The first match ended with points from Hanenkrat, and FHS took game one with an out-of-play hit by MHS.

Game two was even closer with the score being tied eight times at 2, 3, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 points. One of the timelier points scored came from Fairfield's Raeann Hurst, tying the game at 11.

Later in the second game, MHS outscored FHS 9-3 for the 25-18 win.

McClain took the third game 25-15 as the score was tied at 4-4 with an ace by Fairfield's Makenna Corzatt. The score later went to 9-5 due in large part to a point at the top of the net. An ace by Sydney Corzatt helped bring FHS to four points of tying the score at 14-10. Brittany Mullikin put MHS back up five points, and a late block by Makenzie Olaker and a final point by Greene gave MHS a two game to one advantage. Also helping out with McClain's scoring was Mackenzie Garrison.

As the match went into the fourth game, the more the Fairfield student section cheered on their home team, and the match heated up at Grandle Gymnasium and the Lady Lions tied the match once the fourth game was complete.

The fourth game was tied at 6, 7, 9, and later on at 18 when serves by Simmons helped FHS tie the game at 18, then take a 19-18 advantage with a point from Hanenkrat. Following another ace by Simmons and some out-of-play hits by McClain, it was a ball hit over the net by Hanenkrat that MHS was unable to return that put FHS up 23-18. FHS won the match at 25-19.

With the fifth game determining the match winner, it was the Lady Tigers who took an early 13-4 lead with numerous points off hits by Abby Storts.

"Since this was against a Division II school (FHS is Div. IV), I'm pleased with the way our girls played," Hodson said.

Fairfield rallied back to make it a 13-11 score with aces by Hanenkrat. The fifth game and match was settled when Storts scored the final two points, with the 15th point coming via a tip at the net.

FHS falls to 9-6 overall, but they are 8-1 in the Southern Hills League as they travel to Peebles tomorrow night.

MHS improves to 7-8 overall, and they are 1-6 in the South Central Ohio League.

MHS has three more matches this week as they visit Hillsboro on Tuesday, host Chillicothe on Wednesday and host London on Thursday.[[In-content Ad]]
