MOWRYSTOWN — The Whiteoak Wildcats scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal a 5-2 Southern Hills League win over the West Union Dragons, Wednesday at Whiteoak High School.
In the sixth, Jesse Bradds led off with a walk, and Michael Smith was hit by a pitch. With one out, Wes Stratton batted in Bradds with a double, and David Deer hit a two-strike pitch to score Smith. Michael Carraher wrapped up the inning with a sacrifice fly to score Stratton.
"There were not many hits today, but we did have two which were clutch," WHS head coach Chris Veidt said. "We just played Wildcat baseball. They didn't throw it around, and we just had great situational hitting."
West Union scored their runs in the fourth inning.
WHS (13-10) scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth when Smith hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Ryan Emery, who walked to reach the bases.
In the fifth, Emery hit a two-out single to plate Deer, who walked to start the inning. Deer went to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Deer.
The win on the hill went to Todd Ridener, who pitched a seven-inning complete game. He allowed two runs (nine earned) on four hits and no walks. Ridener struck out nine to improve his season record to 3-0.
"Todd grew up today as a pitcher with nine strikeouts," Veidt said. "Just as impressive was having no walks against a solid hitting team."
At the plate for WHS, Emery was 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI. Stratton was also 1-for-2 (a double) with two runs and one RBI.
WHS is scheduled to play their sectional championship game on Thursday, hosting Manchester at 5 p.m.
