HILLSBORO — The Hillsboro Lady Indians led after the first quarter, but that was all as the Miami Trace Lady Panthers woke up and took over the remaining three quarters. Following a strong second frame, MT cruised to a 61-33 win Saturday at HHS.
The opening eight minutes were proof of the improvement of play the Lady Indians bring to the court this season as they led 12-11 when the buzzer sounded.
"When we watched film and scouted Hillsboro, Hillsboro was identical in what we saw in the first quarter," Miami Trace head coach James Stutzman said. "We told the girls not to take them (HHS) lightly, and Hillsboro had their way with us in the first.
"We told the girls in the huddle after the first that needed to change and finally it did. We scored, limited their attempts in the second quarter and carried that into the second half."
Hillsboro's first points came from free throws by Kaylynn Bell, but that was after a three-point play from MT's Deidre McKay. McKay finished with 11 points, and Bell had eight points.
Following a jumper by Josie Cobb (who led all scorers with a game-high 12 points), the Lady Indians answered with a 3-pointer from Bell, tying the game at 5-5, which was set up with a powerful blocked shot from Danielle Gillman on the other half of the court.
After MT regained the lead, HHS scored three straight points from Trista Rhodes and Gillman. Rhodes led HHS with 10 points.
Again, MT regained the lead on a basket, this time by Kristin Reisinger and a jumper by McKay for an 11-8 advantage with 2:06 left in the first.
HHS offset those points with four points to end the quarter with Gillman scoring points in the paint and Hannah Kibler sinking a jumper with 45.8 left on the clock.
If the first quarter was productive for HHS, then the second quarter wasn't as MT outscored HHS 21-4 in the eight minutes. MT ended the second quarter on a 15-0 run in the final 3:25 of the quarter.
"Miami Trace picked up their intensity in the last three quarters, and we didn't," Hillsboro head coach JR Moberly said. "We never recovered from the second quarter.
"I will say our kids did a great job in the first quarter. They communicated well, but we got into foul trouble. I was pleased with our play for the first 10 minutes of the game."
The second ended with a 3-pointer from MT's Taylor Smith at the buzzer.
Hillsboro scored eight points in the third, but MT added 13 to their total for a 45-24 lead after 24 minutes.
Scoring for HHS in the third were Rhodes, Taylor Moberly, Carey Juillerat and Bell.
The final frame wrapped up with Hillsboro scoring nine points from Madison Colliver, Taylor Stanforth, Rhodes, Bell and Alex Stratton.
MT ended the final quarter with 16 points by Ashley Henry (3-pointer), Brooklyne Baldwin, Cobb, Smith, Ariana Mabra and Abby Schwenk.
The loss sends the Lady Indians to 1-5 overall, 1-4 in the SCOL. Miami Trace improves to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the SCOL.
HHS will be back in action on Monday when they host Western Brown.
In the JV game Saturday, MT won 28-22. Madison Colliver and Tyeika Cumberland each led HHS with six points apiece.
GAME NOTES: HHS had 20 fouls … HHS was 12-of-25 from the free-throw line … MT had 17 fouls (three in first half) … MT made four 3-pointers … MT was 9-of-15 from the free-throw line.
