Post 129 tops Findlay, falls to Post 757 in early morning hours

If New York City is known as the "city that never sleeps," then it could be easily said from Friday evening until the early hours of Saturday morning, Shaffer Park was the "ball park that never sleeps."
Getting a late start to their day due to the length of games before them, the Hillsboro Post 129 baseball team wrapped up their Friday games with a win and a loss, as they won their first game of their annual Wooden Bat tournament 5-2 over Findlay and lost their second game, which didn't end until 1:12 a.m, to Chillicothe Post 757, 1-0.
"We played a nice game against Findlay and dropped the ball against Chillicothe," Post 129 head coach Ritchie Butler said.
In their first game of the evening on Friday, Hillsboro scored their five runs in the middle inning with a two-run third and three-run fourth as they wrapped up the game with a total of six hits behind a stellar pitching performance by Tyler Griego.
In the third, Hillsboro sent five batters to the plate with two scoring as Corey Walker opened the inning with a lead-off single, followed by a base hit by Paul Snyder, who batted in Walker from second base (he had a stolen base) with a hit to centerfield for the 1-0 lead.
Snyder then stole second base and scored on a ball hit by Nathaniel Miller, who tallied the RBI.
In the fourth, the Post 129 team (who were the away team on the scoreboard) scored three more times with Walker (1-for-1, two walks, hit-by-pitch), Kyle Carson and Matt Carey all rounding the bases and reaching home for the third, fourth and fifth runs by Post 129.
Carson was first to reach the bases with a one-out double, followed by Carey taking first on an infield error. With two outs, the runners scored on a passed ball, and Carson and Carey (who stole second base) scored. Walker was hit by a pitch, moved to first and proceeded to second, third and home plate all on passed balls for the fifth run of the game.
Hillsboro had opportunities to score more than their five total runs as they walked the bases loaded with two outs in the first inning with Bryce Bean, Walker and Miller all left stranded.
In the fifth, Dustin Taylor hit a leadoff single but was left on the bases with three straight outs recorded. The sixth inning saw Walker and Joey Wilson stay on the bases with Walker drawing a walk and Wilson taking first on a fielder's choice.
Hillsboro finished their game with Findlay (who scored their runs on the fourth and fifth innings), by totaling five hits combined by Walker, Snyder, Taylor, Brandon Wilson and Carson.

The pitching win was credited to Tyler Griego, who pitched all seven innings for a complete game. Griego tossed 111 pitches, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks. The Hillsboro graduate tallied 11 strikeouts.
"Tyler threw well," Butler said. "He got into a couple jams, but worked his way out of it. We have him some run support."
In their second game, a game against Post 757 of Chillicothe, Hillsboro couldn't put enough together at the plate for any runs, losing 1-0.
This game, Hillsboro was the home team as the tied score was broken in the top of the sixth inning with Chillicothe scoring with Mavis taking first on a fielder's choice, stealing second and scoring on a base hit by Downs in the game that didn't start until 11 p.m. and ended at 1:12 a.m. at Shaffer Park.
Hillsboro, who earlier this season defeated Chillicothe Post 757 by a 7-1 score, finished the game with just three hits and three walks.
Post 129 had opportunities to score runs with two base runners in the first, two more in the second, three in the fourth (all left stranded), one in the sixth (left at third base after) and one in the seventh.
In the game against Post 757, Snyder went 2-for-2. The third hit for Hillsboro came off the bat of Zach Docter, who also reached base on an error in the fourth inning.
Hillsboro's biggest threat to score a run came in the fourth with Snyder leading off with a base hit. With one out, Docter took first on an error, and with two outs, Austin Merkle took first on a passed ball on strike three. The third out of the inning came on a ground out to the second baseman.
Joey Wilson was charged with the loss, pitching six innings. Wilson allowed one run (none earned) on four hits, two walks and one hit batter. He totaled nine strikeouts, including the side in the second inning, working out of a bases-loaded jam with just one out, allowing no runs in the inning.
"Joey pitched a nice game for us, and when you hold a team to one run, you should have a chance to win," Butler said. "We just didn't hit in that second game. It's (hitting) been our Achilles heel all year."
Casey Jordan pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief, striking out the final batter of the inning on a full-count. In that inning, Carey had an unassisted double play for the first two outs by catching a bunt fly ball at first base and then catching the runner off the base at first for the second out of the inning.
Post 129 plays two more games on Saturday, starting with a 7 p.m. game with Westerville South, followed by a game at 9 p.m. against Washington C.H. Post 25. Game times are subject to change.
On Sunday, Post 129 will play at 3 p.m. against the Troy Bombers. The two teams who advance to the championship will play at 5 p.m. on Sunday at Shaffer Park.
