HILLSBORO — Moving the start of the game back two hours due to rain wasn't much of a worry for the Hillsboro Post 129 team, as they played excellent defense, had top-notch pitching for a majority of the game and sent the ball out of the ball park for a 4-2 District 7 tournament win over the Colts of Chillicothe Post 757 Friday night at Shaffer Park.
Donning their new red jerseys for the first time this season, Post 129 played like a team who knew they were better than the 18-25 overall regular season mark as they scored their combined four runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings during the scheduled nine innings with Joey Wilson and Paul Snyder sending the baseball over the fence for solo home runs in the second and fourth innings.
Defensively, Hillsboro committed no errors, as Post 757 committed three.
"We played very well defensively, and that kept us in the game," Post 129 head coach Ritchie Butler said. "We had the big hits from Joey and Paul, but the hits by Matt (Carey) and Corey (Walker) were timely hits we needed as well. Tyler's ground out to score Matt was big for us in the fifth.
"We played the partial game Sunday, and we had a couple practices. The team came ready to play (Friday)."
Hillsboro finished the game with five hits with Matt Carey leading at the plate with two hits, as Hillsboro drew no walks in the tournament game.
The scoring began with Post 757 scoring their first run in the top of the first. That would be their lone run until the bottom of the ninth, with Brandon Wilson going into the ninth inning.
As for the Hillsboro offense, Joey Wilson tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the second with two outs.
The tied score was snapped in the bottom of the third with Corey Walker doubling in Bryce Bean, sending the ball to right-centerfield for a 2-1 lead. Bean initially reached the bases on a fielding error by Post 757.
Snyder made it a two-run lead with a solo round tripper to left-centerfield to lead-off the bottom of the fourth.
Carey (2-for-3) singled to lead off the bottom half of the fifth with a line drive to right field. After stealing second and moving to third on an infield error, Carey added the final Post 129 run of the game by scoring on a ground out to the shortstop by Tyler Griego.
With the run support, Wilson, again, pitched another gem for Hillsboro. For the game, Wilson tossed 111 pitches, including nine strikeouts. He allowed a total of six hits and three walks for two runs to gain the win.
"Brandon, after a shaky first inning, threw a heck of a game," Butler said. "He ran out of gas at the end, but pitching nine innings, that's ok."
The save was credited to Luke Taggert, who entered the game with two runners on and no outs in the top of the ninth. Taggert allowed no hits and had one strikeout. He faced three batters.
Hillsboro will play again on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in their second District 7 game, with the contest taking place at Unioto High School with a TBA opponent.
