This past week, the Hillsboro American Legion Post 129 baseball team gained their first two wins of the summer season by defeating Chillicothe Post 757 and Kalamazoo (Mich.) in games at Chillicothe and the annual Troy Summer Tournament in Troy.
The win against Chillicothe Post 757 snapped a four-game skid to start the season as the Hillsboro squad earned a 7-1 win at Mary Lou Patton Park, which was also a league game in the summer SCOL league the Post 129 squad is member of.
Post 129's first win of the season came against Chillicothe Post 757 last Wednesday at Mary Lou Patton Park.
The seven runs by Hillsboro were scattered throughout the game as they scored two runs in the first, followed by a three-run second. The final two runs came with one run in the fifth and one in the sixth.
In the first inning, Corey Walker (2-for-4, one run) singled with one out. He stole second base and scored on a double by Paul Snyder (4-for-4, two runs, two RBIs). With two outs, Joey Wilson singled to score Snyder.
The three-run second inning for Post 129 began with Dustin Taylor singling on a 2-2 count. He was followed with Luke Taggert gaining a base hit, and with one out, Bryce Bean batted in both Taylor and Taggert. Bean scored off a base hit by Snyder.
Hillsboro scored their final two runs with Snyder crossing home plate in the fifth and Taylor Smucker scoring in the sixth.
The winning pitcher was Matt Carey, who pitched six innings, allowing one run (earned) on four hits and four walks, while striking out two. Derek Peters pitched one inning of relief, with three strikeouts.
Post 757 scored their lone run in the fourth inning.
Hillsboro finished the game with 12 hits including hits from Tyler Griego and Brandon Wilson.
Following the win at Chillicothe, the Post 129 squad traveled to Troy this past weekend, where they went 1-4 in five games, winning their final game on Sunday afternoon as they ended the weekend with an overall record of 2-8 on the season through their first 10 games.
In the win against Kalamazoo, the Post 129 team won 12-4, breaking their second four-game losing skid of the season. In their first four games at the Troy tournament, Hillsboro lost to Beverly Post 750, 4-0 on Friday, followed with a loss to Troy Post 43, 7-1 in the evening. On Saturday, they dropped games to the Columbus Braves, 17-3 and another loss to Troy Post 43, 6-3.
Altogether this season, during their first 10 games, Hillsboro has scored a total of 44 runs, while allowing a total of 75 runs.
In the second win of the season, the 12-4 victory against Kalamazoo, Post 129 opened the game with three runs in the first inning, followed by a three-run third and a seven-run sixth for their 13 total runs.
In the first inning, with two outs, Paul Snyder doubled, followed by Joey Wilson being hit by a pitch. Nathaniel Miller singled in Snyder. Both Wilson and Miller scored on a triple by Brandon Wilson.

For Hillsboro, they finished with three runs and five hits. All three runs were scored in the fifth inning for Post 129 with Carey, Docter and Taylor Smucker crossing home plate. RBIs were credited to Bean and Walker.
Gaining hits against the Braves were Bean, Walker, Brandon Wilson, Docter and Smucker.
In their final game on Saturday, Hillsboro fell to Post 43 (Troy) for the second time by a 6-3 score.
