WAVERLY - After defeating the West Union Dragons twice during the regular season, the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs were unable to perform the feat a third time Tuesday night in Division III SE District Sectional play, as the Dragons were competitive from beyond the arc and from the free-throw line, with the Mustangs falling 77-64 at Waverly High School.
The Mustangs trailed 54-32 headed into the final frame, but ended the season with one of, if not their best offensive quarter of the year with a 32-point output, by outscoring the Dragons 32-23 in the fourth frame.
Offensively the game didn't open up as strong for either team with the Dragons winning the quarter 9-6. Then each team combined to score 126 points in the following three quarters.
LC (6-12) continued to struggle in the second frame as West Union won the quarter 21-12, leading after 16 minutes by a score of 30-18. WU made a long distance 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the first half.
In the third the Dragons led the frame 24-14.
The turning point of the game was in free-throw shooting with West Union going 26 of 37 from the free-throw line. LC was 1 of 1 in four quarters.
Each team was productive from beyond the arc with the Mustangs making nine 3-pointers and the Dragons sinking seven.
Lynchburg-Clay's Austin Fawley made seven 3-pointers, scoring a game-high 23 points.
Aaron Skaggs played with balance by scoring 17 points and playing a good all-around game according to head coach Jason McLaughlin.
LC, who stands at 6-12, still has one make up regular season game remaining this season as they are scheduled to face the Eastern Brown Warriors in Southern Hills League play on Tuesday, March 2.
