DODSONVILLE — Not only has the offense of the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs been good this season, but their defense as of late has been elite by allowing just one goal in their last eight matches.
It was no different on Friday, Oct. 1 with the Mustangs defeating Southern Hills League rival Fairfield, 2-0 at Lynchburg-Clay High School.
"This was an excellent match as the tournament draws near," LC coach Dennis West said. "We had several open shots, but just didn't finish.
"Our defense has really stepped up the past eight matches."
Both LC goals were scored in the second half with Wesley Pierson and Gage Waits putting the ball into the back of the net.
Pierson, who beat the defense of FHS, scored his goal at the 34:24 mark of the final 40-minute half.
"Wesley's goal was really huge for us," West said. "His goal gave us the lead."
Waits scored his goal with 14:18 left in the game on a kick from 25 yards out over the keeper.
Colin Creek had six saves at keeper for LC. Wilson had nine saves for the Lions.
The Mustangs out-shot FHS 22-8.
LC now stands at 11-0-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the SHL.
