DODSONVILLE - In a non-league matchup at Lynchburg-Clay High School it was the Mustangs who defended their home turf, scoring three times to outlast the Western Brown Broncos 3-2.

The win improves L-C to 4-1-2 overall.

L-C came out and took a two-goal advantage with two first half points against the Broncos.

Lynchburg-Clay sophomore Michael Smith gave his team the early one-goal lead after he put the ball in the back of the net, with an assist from senior Wes Yeomans, leaving 17:11 in the opening 40 minutes of action.

Sophomore Andrew Chaney put another point on the scoreboard for the Mustangs as he netted a point after he accepted a pass, from a cross-kick, by Codey Tate with 11:09 left in the first half.

Things got close for the Mustangs late in the first half when Ryan Bachman scored a goal for the Broncos with 5:28 left in the half. His goal was followed with an own goal by the Mustangs, as the L-C defender kicked the ball off a teammate at the 2:22 mark of the half, tying the game at 2-2.

“We had a very good start, but a poor finish to the first half,” L-C coach Dennis West said. “Our younger players saved us on offense and defense.”

The own goal didn’t stop the Mustangs in the second half as Tate broke the tied game with a goal at the 27:06 mark of the final half to preserve the win. Tate’s goal was assisted by sophomore Tyler Davidson with a cross-kick.

The Broncos had 14 saves in the loss, allowing the Mustangs to take 34 shots at goal.

Junior Colin Creek had six saves at keeper in 75 minutes defending the goal. Senior Jorden DeHaas played five minutes at keeper with one save. WB had 15 shots at goal.

“We must get better at finishing. We are giving up too many scoring opportunities,” West said. “We are getting closer to where we were before fair week. Our passing led to all three scores.”
