Mustangs blank CNE 4-0

DODSONVILLE – After defeating Highland County rival Fairfield Friday, the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs came back less than 24 hours later, winning their second game in as many days, defeating Clermont NE 4-0 Saturday at Lynchburg-Clay High School.
The Mustangs (3-1-1, 7-1-3) scored two goals in each half for the four-goal victory.
L-C sophomore Michael Smith continued from where he left off against the Lions, as he scored two goals Friday, and then netted two goals in the first half Saturday against CNE.
Smith’s first goal came with 29:25 left in the first half as he beat the defender of CNE for the 1-0 lead. His second goal of the half was assisted by senior Brandon McCarthy on a cross kick with 19:49 left in the opening 40 minute half.
In the second half the score continued to improve for the Mustangs with sophomore Wesley Pierson blasting a goal at the 34:04 mark of the second half.
The final goal came when senior Wes Yeomans scored off a deflection with 28:02 left in the game.
L-C junior keeper Collin Creek had seven saves.
“The boys played extremely good soccer for all 80 minutes,” L-C coach Dennis West said. “Our speed broke down CNE’s defense and set up some, very good scoring opportunities.
“Our bench provided us a chance to rest our starters, as they came in a played well.”
L-C stands at 7-1-3 overall, 3-1-1 in SHL play.
