BAINBRIDGE — In a two-week homestand to start the 2010 football season, the Paint Valley Bearcats realize things aren't going the way they expected.
On Friday, Paint Valley played even with the Williamsburg Wildcats for one quarter, but as the week two game went on, turnovers, once again, plagued the Bearcats, falling to Williamsburg, 31-13 at George Knisley Field.
"The score is deceiving compared to the competitiveness of the game," Hollon said. "We had the game at 17-13, but this was the second week in a row where we had major special team mistakes."
The special team mistakes by the Bearcats included allowing the Wildcats to take the ball 71 yards to the end zone on a kickoff with two seconds left in the third quarter by Joey Clowery.
The problem was PV just scored 10 seconds earlier to cut the Wildcats' lead to four points when they chipped out a 13 play, 77-yard drive, as senior Brenan Dove finished the drive with an 8-yard run to the end zone. The PAT attempt was no good.
Dove finished with 18 carries for 104 yards, his second straight 100-yard game of the season.
"As a coaching staff, we were not happy with the play of our offensive line," Hollon said. "Our backs ran hard, and whatever yards they got it was on their own. We got completely manhandled up front, and we need to fix it quick. Credit Williamsburg, they were good on the front line."
For the game, the Bearcats fumbled five times, unable to recover their fumbles four times.
"We gave them 17 points off of our mistakes," Hollon said.
Williamsburg had three turnovers of their own, but the Bearcats were unable to capitalize off any of the Wildcats' miscues.
"I credit our kids for playing hard, and our defense took some steps in the right direction, but you have to credit Williamsburg too, they are a solid ball club," Hollon said. "We just need to not make as many mistakes."
Though the Wildcats outscored PV 21-6 in the second half, the game was closer scoring-wise in the first 24 minutes with Williamsburg leading, 10-7.
Williamsburg (1-1) scored first with 8:21 left in the opening quarter when senior Jason Zavislak scored on an 8 yard run for the touchdown. Dane Weeks kicked the PAT for the early 7-0 lead.
Paint Valley (0-2) answered with a 6 yard TD run by senior Nolan Taylor. The touchdown run by Taylor ended a nine play, 62-yard drive. PV senior kicker Garett Tyree kicked the PAT in his first action of the season due to injury.
Williamsburg regained the lead in the second quarter with a 25 yard field goal by Weeks for a three-point advantage.
The Wildcats lead went to 17-7 early in the third quarter when senior Brandon Boggs (5-8, 160) wheeled the ball 12 yards to the end zone with 7:18 left in the third. Weeks' PAT was good.
The final score of the game came with 2:11 left in the fourth quarter when Kevin Keeton taking the ball into the end zone.
Hollon was pleased with his defense, especially with the return of junior linebacker Dylan Fewster. The junior had nine tackles and one interception.
"Getting Dylan back made our defense much better," Hollon said.
Freshman Nate Yoakum had eight tackles and one fumble recovery for PV.
Senior Colton Branscomb finished with six tackles and one fumble recovery.
The win lifts Williamsburg to 1-1, and PV falls to 0-2.
Paint Valley will take on the McClain Tigers (2-0) this week at McClain Field for their annual rivalry game.
