Lions win big against Greyhounds

LEESBURG — In their final tune-up before the Division IV sectional postseason begins, the Fairfield Lions had a hot bat and didn't let up, dominating the Manchester Greyhounds, 14-1 in a five-inning run-rule Southern Hills League contest, Wednesday at FHS.

FHS (12-6) will face Portsmouth Clay on Thursday in their Division IV SE District sectional game at FHS. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. FHS is a No. 3 seed, and Clay is a No. 6 seed.

On Wednesday, the Lions began the game with a nine-run bottom of the first that included seven hits and one error.

Crossing home plate for FHS in the first were Ian Adams, Ryan Bates, Nathaniel Miller, Cody Tolle, Dakota Hargrave, Jordan Boles and Cody Bennett. Adams scored twice in the first inning.

Also in the first, Kyle Carson extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single. Carson finished the day 2-for-3 with four RBIs.
 
FHS added one run in both the second and third innings to take an 11-1 lead, as Manchester scored their lone run in the top of the third by Jordan Perry. Scoring for FHS in those innings were Joey Wilson and Bennett.

The Lions tacked on three more runs in the fourth with Hargrave, Boles and Adams scoring runs.

Offensively, the Lions collected eight hits and walked five times.

Tolle finished 2-for-3 with one run, followed by Adams at 1-for-3 with three runs, two steals and one walk. Bennett was 1-for-2 with three runs, three steals, two runs and one RBI.
 
Fairfield continued to produce at the plate with Miller gaining one RBI, along with one run and one steal. Hargrave was 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and two steals. Boles was 1-for-1 with two walks, two runs and one RBI.

FHS tallied a total of eight steals and 10 RBIs.

The win went to Wilson, who pitched five innings of one-run, five-hit baseball. He walked one and struck out four. The run allowed was unearned.

Fairfield now stands at 12-6-1 overall.
