WASHINGTON C.H. – Everything went the way of the Washington Lady Blue Lions Tuesday evening as they controlled the offensive and defensive side of the court, soundly defeating South Central Ohio League foe McClain 52-32.
The Lady Tigers struggled from the floor as they shot 13 of 42 for 42 percent. On the other hand, the Lady Blue Lions were 21 of 35 in field goal shooting for 60 percent.
McClain kept it close one quarter as they trailed 15-12. Then the stingy Washington defense held MHS to five points in the second to take a 27-17 lead after 16 minutes.

“We told the girls Washington executed their game plan and we didn’t,” McClain head coach Dennis Overstake said. “We couldn’t run any kind of offense.”
Washington senior Lauryn Robinson led the Lady Blue Lions with 13 points, 11 in the first half. Catie Chrisman scored 12 for the Lady Blue Lions and Anna Frazier scored 11 points in the Washington victory.
“Robinson hurt us in the first half,” Overstake said. “She scored two points in the final two quarters, but they (WSHS) had others step up in the second half.”
The Lady Tigers (4-1, 7-2) scored first with a free throw by senior Megan Saylor. WSHS countered with a three-point play from Robinson and a jumper from Loren Knisley for a 5-1 lead.
McClain senior Kate Hammond answered with a three-point play of her own, but the Lady Blue Lions came back with points from Amanda Pendergraft.
In the latter part of the first Robinson and Hammond answered bucket for bucket with Washington taking an 11-10 lead with 2:14 showing on the scoreboard.
Pendergraft and Robinson extended the WSHS lead to five points with consecutive baskets and Hammond, with a pass from Jenna Perie, made the score 15-12 with 15 seconds left in the same quarter. Hammond ended the first with 11 points.

McClain scored with a basket from Perie, but Washington’s Pendergraft and Frazier combined for a 5-0 run to put the Lady Lions ahead 20-14 midway through the second. Frazier’s 3-pointer in the run forced MHS to call a timeout.
Following the timeout McClain’s Chrissy Cobb sank a 3-ball to bring MHS within three of Washington. The Lady Blue Lions ended the quarter with seven straight points as Frazier sank a 3-pointer, followed with inside points from Robinson and Knisley, as Knisley’s basket came at the buzzer.
The second half belonged to WSHS as they out scored the Lady Tigers 25-15, netting a 14-point third quarter.
For the Lady Tigers, Buck brought MHS within nine as she made a trifecta, but after points from Washington, senior Cortney Hyer made a big jumper for MHS as she took the ball the length of the court.
Perie and Hyer combined for four points late in the third, but their points were topped with consecutive baskets by Chrisman and Frazier.
Alex Taylor scored the final points of the quarter for MHS.
Washington dominated and sealed the win with an 11-4 final period.
Scoring for MHS in the fourth was Buck and Hammond. Hammond converted a 3-pointer at the 2:02 mark. Hammond finished with a game-high 14 points. The MHS senior also had five rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Sammy Rooks gained two rebounds for MHS. McClain’s Kate Crabtree grabbed one rebound. Frankie Wise had one assist.
Washington finished with 21 rebounds. MHS gained a total of 14 boards.
MHS will play again Friday as they travel to take on the Hillsboro Lady Indians at the new Hillsboro High School.
