WASHINGTON C.H. — A 16-point fourth-quarter surge by the host Washington Lady Blue Lions squad was the difference Wednesday night, putting them in the lead for good, as they defeated the visiting McClain Lady Tigers 39-32 for a South Central Ohio League win.
Neither team shot over 35 percent for the game, as the Lady Tigers were 12-of-35 for 34 percent, and the Lady Blue Lions were 13-of-40 for 32 percent from the field.
Turnovers were an issue as well for each team, with Washington committing 15 and McClain, 13.
"We always have to use the zone," McClain head coach Dennis Overstake said. "Our size hurts us at times. Everybody has bigger players than we do, but Washington did a nice job of working the ball high-low, so it is hard for us to match up.
"We have to change it up to make it harder on their post players."
McClain did keep Washington (3-1, 5-1) from scoring from the outside, but Washington did the same, with neither team making a 3-pointer, as they went a combined 0-for-17 from beyond the arc.
"That was a big plus for us, but again, we have to be able to take advantage of that and score points on our end of the floor," Overstake said.
Though the percentages were low from the field, the game was as close as it could get with the score being tied nine times total and six times in the second half. But a 12-3 run in the game's final 4:47 by Washington was enough to secure the league win.
McClain (1-2, 3-3) entered the final quarter leading 25-23 off a last-second jumper by Sammy Rooks, but the score was tied at 25 when Washington's Corrine Ryan hit a layup. Ryan ended the game with 10 points.
Rooks followed with another jumper, but that was answered with a basket by Ryan, making it a 27-27 game.
Again it was Rooks who put the Lady Tigers back in front with a jumper at the 5:42 mark of the fourth (29-27). Rooks finished with a team-high eight points, along with two steals and one assist.
"Anytime you play Coach Overstake's team they are going to be battle-tested and will be ready to go," Washington head coach John Denen said. "In our conference, you have to be ready to play every night, and so far this season we've had to be ready."
Washington's Jessica Guyett, who finished with a game-high 17 points, put her team back in the top spot with a three-point play, followed by two points from Paige McRoberts.
Rooks was there for MHS to stop the short Lady Blue Lion run with a free-throw conversion, but after that, points by Carleigh Chaffins, Molli Shaw and Maggie McDonald sealed the Washington win.
"(Jessica) Guyett does a nice job of getting inside. When we stayed in man she would just go one-on-one after we got Jenna foul trouble and we had to take her out of the ball game," Overstake said. "In the second half (Guyett) was able to get offensive rebounds … We weren't able to do a good job of boxing her out."
The first frame ended with an 11-11 score, but getting there was a rocky road for both teams.
Jenna Perie was first to score for MHS as the Lady Tigers eventually took a 5-0 lead with points from Kaitlyn Faulconer and Rooks to start the game.
The five-point lead was erased when the Lady Blue Lions got ahead of steam with Guyett and Ryan combining for five consecutive points with 2:30 left in the quarter.
Following a timeout, Brittany Mullikin gave MHS the lead. That was followed by a steal and fast-break points from Shania Massie for a 9-5 advantage. Massie finished with five points.
The Lady Blue Lions ended the competitive first frame with a 6-2 run with Guyett tying the score at 11 to end the quarter.
The second frame ended with MHS leading 17-16. Getting that lead wasn't so easy, as the Lady Blue Lions scored the quarter's first five points for a 16-11 lead with 6:41 left in the frame.
McClain rallied to go on a 7-0 run to end the second with Tara Karnes, Kate Crabtree and Faulconer scoring. Faulconer sank a long-range jumper at the buzzer for the one-point lead at the half.
The Lady Tigers opened the third with points from Perie (extending the scoring run to 9-0), as she had to sit out most of the first half with two fouls. Perie wrapped up the night with six points.
Three straight points from Washington tied the score at 19, and later in the quarterm a put-back basket by Guyett gave the home team a 21-20 lead.
After the score was tied by Taylor Faulconer, Perie put MHS back in front, but two more points (via free throws) from Guyett tied the score at 23.
The Lady Tigers will be back in action on Saturday as they will host the London Lady Red Raiders who are 0-6 on the season.
In Wednesday's JV game Washington defeated MHS 32-14. Leading the MHS JV team were Katy Unger and Haylee Turner with four points each. Ali Laytart led Washington's JV team with 15 points.
GAME NOTES: Taylor Faulconer had four rebounds, two steals and one assist … Shania Massie had four steals … Crabtree finished with four rebounds and three steals … Karnes finished with four rebounds … Washington out-rebounded MHS 29-18 (12 offensive for WCH) … Adrienne Perrill (WCH) had two blocked shots … MHS finished with 12 steals … Each team had two assists.
