Lady Patriots drop opening games of '11 season

HILLSBORO — The 2011 season is off to a slow start for the Southern State Lady Patriots as they have dropped their first two games of the season, most recently on Sunday in a 89-61 loss to Miami University-Middletown at the Patriot Center in Hillsboro.
In their opening game of the season, SSCC lost 77-74 to West Virginia University-Parkersburg, but on Sunday that score wasn't as close with the Lady Patriots (0-2) trailing 52-31 at halftime. In the second half, they were outscored 37-30.
Though they suffered the loss in their home opener, SSCC did have the game's two highest scorers with Emily Hoop (Peebles) and Kayla Seip (Whiteoak) each scoring 18 points.
Seip scored 10 points in the first half, adding the final eight points in the second half with three field goals and two free-throws. For the game the WHS grad was 4-for-7 from the free-throw line.
Hoop was on target from beyond the arc with four 3-pointers and two field goals. She was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. In the second half, Hoop sank three of her four 3-pointers.
The third Lady Patriot to score in double figures was Emily Hargett with 12 points. Hargett, a Whiteoak graduate, had five field goals and was 2-of-4 from the free-throw line. Eight of her 12 points were scored in the first half.
Also for SSCC, Hannah Gobin (Connersville, Ind.) finished with nine points, and Ashley Crone (Whiteoak) scored four points.
As a team, SSCC was 13-for-19 from the free-throw line and made a total of 18 two-point baskets from the field.
MUM had three players reach double figures, and a total of nine players scored at least three points. Leading the way was Brianne Thorton with 16 points, followed by Kristin Washington with 14 points. Megan Costa scored 13 points, Tiffany Kossler scored 12 and Ashley Heard finished with 11.
For the game, MUM made 36 two-point baskets, five 3-pointers and were 2-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Last season SSCC finished 1-15 overall.
SSCC will play again on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at Ohio University-Chillicothe at 5:30 p.m.

For WVU-Parkersburg, Jesska Moore led with 21 points, followed with double-figure scoring by Mary Seagraves with 18, Samantha Hicks 16 and Kristina Hunt 12.
WVU-Parkersburg made eight 3-pointers and was 9-for-22 from the free-throw line.
