DODSONVILLE — One up, one down for the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs. One up, one down for new LC head coach Whitney Lewis.

The season opener for the Lady Mustangs can be described in just two words: dominating defense.

LC (1-0) not only had a 26-0 offensive run against the Huntington Lady Huntsmen on Tuesday night, but allowed just 14 points (10 through three quarters) for a 67-14 non-league win at LCHS.

The Lady Mustangs didn't allow more than four points scored on them in any of the four quarters played as they were relentless for 32 straight minutes.

"After the game, I told them 'good job in the first game of the season,'" Whitney Lewis said. "We came out, played hard and we have to start getting ready for our next game.

"I was pleased with our defense. We were aggressive, and that's what I want us to be."

Not only did their defense set the tone for the game, but the offense didn't hold back much either, leading 19-4 after the first quarter, followed by a halftime score of 35-6. Once the third frame ended, it was Lynchburg-Clay 53, Huntington 10.

LC was led in scoring by junior Laney Lewis with 17 points. She added eight rebounds, four blocks, three assists and three steals.

That wasn't all for the Lady Mustangs as senior Brooke Hertlein had 13 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists.

The third Lady Mustang to score in double figures was junior Emma Setty with 10 points, and senior teammate Karen Hilt finished with eight points and a team-high five steals.

"We didn't quit at any point in time, and I liked that," Lewis said."I was not so pleased with the amount of fouls we had. Again, our greatest strength will be our greatest weakness in terms of making sure we can harness that."

As for the actual game, LC opened the first quarter with five straight points from the duo of Hertlein and Lewis. The lead increased to 8-2 when Lewis converted a three-point play, and then 10-2 when the junior Lewis connected twice from the free-throw line with 3:27 left in the quarter.

LC freshman Madysyn Creighton increased the lead with a long-range jumper from the corner for her first career varsity points. The freshman also added three assists in her varsity debut.

The opening quarter was completed with a jumper by Hilt, a three-point play by Setty and a jumper by Lewis with 3 seconds remaining for the aforementioned 19-4 advantage.

In the second, Hilt, Lewis, Sarah Rosselott and Hertlein combined for 16 points. Rosselott finished the quarter and the game with four points.

The second quarter also was the start of the 26-0 scoring run by LC over the Lady Huntsmen of the Scioto Valley Conference. The first points of the run came with 6:05 left in the second by Lewis, and the final two points were from Hertlein with 2:56 left in the third quarter. In between (along from Hertlein and Lewis), Rosselott and Hilt contributed to the scoring. The run ended with Shania Irvin scoring a layup with 2:45 left in the third. Also in the third, Setty drained a 3-pointer with 1:43 left on the clock.

"We practice defense on a daily basis, and that is something we are going to rely on,"  Lewis said. "Our focus is defense. If we hold our opponent, we are going to win one way or another, so we just make that a focus each and every game, and today was no different."

Leading by 43 points after three quarters, the Lady Mustangs toned down their play in the final eight minutes. Also scoring in the game for LC were Morgan Fittro, Samantha Whitenack and Ashley Tenas, all with two points each.

Coach Lewis was overall pleased with the win.

"It's good getting the first win. These girls are great to coach and to work with, so I knew it would come sooner or later," she said. "It didn't have much to do with me, but they are a talented group, and I'm glad they got their first win on their first game."

Leading Huntington in scoring was Jackie Keilough with six points.

The win lifts LC to 1-0 overall. They will play again on Thursday when they travel to take on North Adams in their first Southern Hills League game of the season.
