In a thrilling, five-game match, the Fairfield Lady Lions captured their first sectional volleyball championship Thursday, defeating the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats, 19-25, 25-22, 26-24, 22-25 and 15-10 in the final game.
"The girls played great and were really excited about winning the sectional Coach Mary Beth Hodson told The Highland County Press.
Sophomore hitter Whitney Hanenkrat had an outstanding overall game for Fairfield. "Whitney played phenomenal for us," Hodson said. "She was strong on the front row and had several awesome kills and digs."
Hodson said senior Carlie Stevens, freshmen twins McKenna and Sydney Corzatt, freshman Brenna Simmons, junior Erin Clarkson, sophomore Kaiti Esselman and sophomore Kaley Davis all played very well in the win.
"Carlie made some awesome blocks from the front row," Hodson said. "The twins (McKenna and Sydney) are very quick and they just don't stop. They go after everything. Erin and Brenna played very well, too.
"Kaiti Esselman, our libero (defensive specialist) made some good returns from their strong-side hitter," the coach said.
Hodson praised Davis' serving and setting as well.
The Lady Lions will travel to Wellston and play at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28 in the district semifinals.[[In-content Ad]]
