Indians tame Panthers in SCOL battle

Battling back from a 10-0 run by the Miami Trace Panthers to open up the South Central Ohio League battle, the Hillsboro Indians dominated the final three quarters with team play by spreading the ball to open players, en route to a 61-47 win Tuesday night at Hillsboro High School.
The win lifts the Indians to 9-8 overall, 5-5 in the SCOL.
Things weren't easy for the Tribe early in the first quarter as they allowed Ty Leach, Isaiah Carson and Zac Carson to put the Panthers up by 10 points with 4:04 left in the quarter.
Then the slow start by the Indians began to gain some momentum, with Aric Carroll and Colt Coates each scoring quick baskets with 3:00 left in the quarter.
Following a time out, Coates knocked down a 3-pointer, but Isaiah Carson came back with two points to put MT ahead 12-7.
The quarter ended with Caleb Wilson and Coates netting a combined six points to bring the Indians within one point of the lead at 12-11.
By the time the scoreboard displayed quarter No. 2, the Indians were in full gear, with Carroll starting the quarter with a jumper to put HHS ahead 13-12.
After the score was tied at 14, a inside bucket by Carroll, followed with a 3-pointer from the corner by the junior guard, allowed the Tribe to take a 19-14 advantage with 4:59 left on the clock.
The Panthers didn't get near taking back the lead as HHS held MT to just four points in the second frame.
Eli Hogsett put HHS up 21-16, and Carroll followed with 1:43 left in the first half with a 3-pointer to give the Tribe an eight point advantage.
The game continued to fall in favor of the Indians, with Coates, Carroll, Dylan Barreras and Airic Steagall pushing HHS ahead by 11 points at 30-21 with 5:24 left in the third.
After points from Isaiah Carson, Wilson put down an inside bucket and one free throw to extend the Hillsboro lead to 34-22.
Late in the third, the Indians were relentless, with Turner netting two free throws, Steagall draining a 3-pointer and finally, Hogsett scoring with a trifecta, as HHS jumped ahead 44-27 with 1:34 remaining in the quarter.
Leading 50-28 as the final frame, the Indians emptied the bench and MT won the quarter 19-11.
Kiefer put HHS in the lead at 54-36, and with 43.1 left in the game, Chase Gilliland sank a free throw. Dawson Barreras made two free throws in the final 30 seconds to complete the scoring in the game.
Isaiah Carson led all scorers with 23 points. Carroll led the Indians with 18 points, followed by Coates with nine.
HHS made five 3-pointers and were 8 of 15 from the free-throw line. MT finished 8 of 19 in free throw shooting.
The loss drops Miami Trace to 6-11 overall, 4-5 in the SCOL.
Hillsboro will play their final home game of the season Saturday night as they host Central Crossing at HHS, with the freshman action starting at 4 p.m.
In JV play Tuesday, HHS defeated MT 61-26. Tyrand Cumberland led HHS with 19 points, followed by Wyatt Gleadle with 15. In freshman play, MT defeated the Indians 47-46.
