DODSONVILLE — Lynchburg-Clay junior Karen Hilt recently gave a verbal commitment to Division I Morehead State University to play women's soccer in the fall of 2012.

Hilt has been a starter for the Lady Mustangs for the past three seasons, starting as center-mid since her first match for LC in 2008, her freshman season. Since that game, she has compiled 37 goals, scoring 14 in each of the past two seasons and nine during her first season at the varsity level.

"Karen has worked to develop her skills, and as a result her scoring and assists have grown each year," LC varsity girls soccer coach Dennis West said. "Because of her accuracy and power, she takes almost all of our free kicks."

Hilt led LC with 11 assists this past season, and during her first two seasons with LC, she tallied seven. This past season, LC won the sectional title by a 2-0 score over
Peebles. Hilt scored the first goal of that game in the first half.

This past season, LC went 12-6-1 overall.

The Morehead State Lady Eagles have won the past three Ohio Valley Conference championships. Hilt won't officially sign with Morehead State until National Signing Day following the 2011 fall sports season.

Hilt is listed on the ESPN.com Rise girls soccer comments for 2012, and on topdrawersoccer.com players to watch list for 2012 women's soccer commitment list.

In her high school career, Hilt, known for her physical play on the field, was named All-Southern Hills League her freshman and sophomore season and first-team All-District her sophomore and junior seasons.

Hilt also is a member of the Kings Soccer Academy U17 team, where she plays for coach Steve Bornhoffer. That team was state runner-up in 2008 and a state semifinalist in 2010 in Kentucky.

"It's been a pleasure coaching Karen. All of her awards are a product of her work ethic and education," Bornhoffer said. "Karen's character will make her successful on and off the field at the next level. It's an exciting time in her life, and she is very deserving of the scholarship earned to Morehead State University."

West also talked about the work ethic of Hilt, who he has coached the past three seasons at LC, as the team has reached three consecutive sectional finals and two district tournaments.

"The other players on our team have recognized Karen's talent and leadership by giving her the highest vote total each year since she started her high school career," West said. "On our team, we allow our players to vote for the nominees for postseason awards. To me, this shows that (the players) acknowledge her ability and work ethic."

Hilt has also been selected to the Olympic Development Team for Ohio South for the past three years. That has earned her the right to attend a regional ODP camp in Decatur, Ill.

The soccer field isn't the only thing Hilt is successful at, as she is a member of the National Honor Society, carrying a 4.0 GPA. She's a member of student council for the third consecutive year. Currently she is the vice-president, and next school year she'll be the president of student council. Along with all her classroom accolades, Hilt is a member of the Spanish Club and is a member of the LC girls varsity basketball team, which reached the district finals this season.

"Karen has been an inspiration to her classmates and teammates both on and off the field," West said. "The goals and assists she has accumulated are only a small part of her values to our team and program."[[In-content Ad]]
