DODSONVILLE – After taking a three-goal lead in the first 40 minutes of action, the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs worked on their passing in the second half against a young Peebles team, with the Lady Mustangs defeating PHS 5-0 Monday night at LCHS in non-league play.

The contest Monday was the non-league contest between both Southern Hills League soccer teams.

“We told the girls we were going to work on our passing game in the second half,” L-C coach Dennis West said. “We felt like we were in control of the game. Peebles is a young team full of freshmen and sophomores.”

The Lady Mustangs came out quick against the Lady Indians scoring their first goal at the 34:29 mark of the first half as freshman forward Taylor Scott netted a goal off a kick from the corner by senior Alex Baker, who was credited with the assist.

The second goal by the Lady Mustangs came from junior forward Lindsey Rosselott. Rosselott’s goal was scored as she maneuvered past numerous PHS defenders, kicking the ball past the keeper of Peebles with 23:25 remaining in the first half.

L-C sophomore forward Brooke Hertlein, with a kick from an angle, made the score 3-0 in favor of the Lady Mustangs with 20:50 left in the opening half.

L-C junior keeper Shelbi Halverson made a diving save at goal near the 20 minute mark to keep the scoreless shutout in tact. Halverson finished the game with seven saves.

Leading by three goals at the half, L-C added two final goals in the second half as Scott netted her second goal of the game for a 4-0 lead. The assist was credited to sophomore midfielder Karen Hilt.

The final goal came off the foot of Hertlein with 1:06 left in the second half, with the assist going to sophomore defender Molly Greenawalt.

L-C had a total of 23 shots, with the Peebles keeper finishing with eight saves.

The Lady Mustangs have three more games this week, four games in the next seven days.

“We have a great group of freshman, and Taylor (Scott) is just one of them. She’s had a good season so far.

“Brooke (Hertlein) also had a nice game offensively for us.”

The win moves the Lady Mustangs above .500 at 6-5 overall. L-C is 2-3 in the SHL.

The Lady Mustangs play again Wednesday as they host North Adams in a makeup game in both boys and girls games.

Next Monday (Oct. 12) the Lady Mustangs will host their “Shoot for a Cure” game against the Eastern Brown Lady Warriors.
