BAINBRIDGE — After weeks of not being able to gain a win, the Paint Valley Bearcats earned their second straight victory Friday night, with a convincing 38-13 win over the Unioto Shermans.

Paint Valley now stands at 2-7 overall, with one week remaining in the 2010 football season.

But on Friday, they dominated the first half, outscoring UHS, a three-win team, 31-7.

"This is what we have been waiting for during the last nine weeks," PV head coach Pete Hollon said. "It was total domination. Our defensive front seven controlled the line of scrimmage, which set the tone for our team."

Garett Tyree, a senior, has fully returned from a preseason injury, and it is showing on the field, as he scored the first 10 points for the Bearcats. He not only scored the game's first touchdown, but kicked the extra point and a field goal.

Tyree started his 10-point scoring session with a 27-yard field goal with 7:12 left in the first quarter, followed with a 63-yard interception return, going the distance for six points. He kicked the PAT to put the Bearcats up 10-0.

Tyree finished the game with 78 yards rushing on four carries, 79 yards receiving on two receptions, one field goal, and five extra points.

"The kids responded with the game plan from Coach (Evan) Gallaugher (the Bearcat defensive coordinator) with excellent play. The guys up front caused havoc on their offense."

PV, who have two Scioto Valley Conference wins, added to their lead with a 14-yard run from senior Brenan Dove with 11:18 left in the second quarter. Tyree added the PAT for a Bearcat lead of 17 points.

The momentum of PV was slowed for a few moments with the Shermans scoring on a Storm Cottrill 14-yard touchdown reception off a pass from Brick Davis with 9:12 left in the first half.

The Bearcats responded in a big way, scoring 14 unanswered points to end the first half.

Three minutes after Cottrill's TD, Dove pounded his way into the end zone on a 5-yard score for six points. Dove has 12 carries for 70 yards, along with two receptions for 35 yards.

Then with 39 seconds remaining, Tyree scored his second touchdown of the half, this one through the air, catching an 11-yard pass from Eli Barker. Tyree kicked both PATs for a PV lead of 31-7 after 24 minutes. Barker finished 4 of 7 for 114 yards.

In the second half, there was no scoring in the third by either team. Unioto's Dakota Davis scored on a 15-yard reception, with the pass from Brick Davis with 11:18 left in the game. The 2-point conversion was no good.

PV freshman Mark Clifford scored the final TD of the game (9:51) on a 1-yard run. Tyree kicked the PAT. Clifford finished the game with 20 carries for 121 yards.

On defense for PV, Tyree, Barker and Logan Ackley each had an interception.

"We've lost three two-way starters in the Huntington game, but some sophomores and underclassmen are stepping up, and we are liking what we are seeing," Hollon said.

Hollon went back to talking about Tyree and what he means to the team.

"The results with a healthy Garett Tyree on the field shows he's a great football player. He makes such a difference when he's on the field," he said.

The Bearcats have one game remaining this season, facing the Zane Trace Pioneers this Friday at 7:30 p.m.
