BAINBRIDGE - Paint Valley has a tall task at hand Friday night on their home turf when the Westfall Mustangs bring their 34-game Scioto Valley Conference winning streak to Bainbridge.
"Westfall is a very solid, consistent team. They have good size and are very athletic, Paint Valley head coach Pete Hollon said. "They are very well coached."
The Westfall offense is a shotgun-spread, which is perfect for Grove City transfer quarterback Vinny Williamson, a 5-10, 210 pound senior.
"The best I can describe him is he plays like Fran Tarkenton used to play," Hollon said. "He's not super athletic, but he is extremely football smart. He scrambles better than any kid I¹ve seen in my 26 years of coaching."
Williamson can run. Last week he rushed for 233 yards on 27 carries.
"They run the ball well and are big up front. When you run the spread offense you must have athletic lineman," Hollon said. "Their receivers are tall and are a threat to take it to the house every time they get the ball."
The impressive winning streak in the SVC isn't the only accolade the Mustangs have achieved the past five years. They have made the playoffs five straight times and in '07 made the Final 4.
The defense of the Mustangs is solid and has 11 senior starters, as they had 27 transfers join their team this season.
"Their linebackers fly to the ball and seniors Nick Hammond and Matt Near are good football players," Hollon said.
With this being Paint Valley's fourth straight home game, along with homecoming, the Bearcats want to prove they belong atop of the SVC.
"After coming off a solid league win last week the kids have an extra bounce in their step," Hollon said. "We are focused on our second league game and our seniors want to beat Westfall . They want to be the top program in the conference.
"To win we got to use our speed and tackle well. We have to keep Williamson in the pocket. Also we want to get more touches to Garett Tyree. He is one of the best athletes in the area."
Both teams enter the game 2-2 overall, 1-0 in SVC play.[[In-content Ad]]
