DODSONVILLE — Lynchburg-Clay sophomore Quin Wells opened the 2026 Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs baseball team by being perfect, as he tossed a perfect game on Tuesday evening against rival Fairfield, 10-0 in five innings.
In five innings on the mound, Wells allowed no hits, runs or walks, and the Mustangs committed no errors.
Wells sent the Lions down in order in the top of the first with a groundout to shortstop Harley Lewis at second base, followed by a fly out to right fielder Alex Van Fleet, and the third out was recorded with a called third strike.
The top of the second saw Wells force a fly out to left fielder Aiden Bene, followed by a called third strike for out two and a swinging strikeout as LCHS held a 1-0 lead.
After the Mustangs pushed their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second, Wells in the top of the third recorded three consecutive strikeouts, with the first two being swinging strikeouts. The inning ended with a called third strike, caught by catcher Elam Faust.
The Mustangs built a 5-0 lead when the top of the fourth began, and that inning saw Wells gain three straight outs with a pop out to the catcher Faust, a groundout to second baseman Aric Slack and a swinging strikeout to end the top half of the fourth inning.
LCHS gained a six-run lead after the bottom of the fourth, and in the top of the fifth inning Wells ended his day on the mound with three straight strikeouts, all three swinging strikeouts.
The Mustangs finished the game with a run-rule victory by scoring four final runs in the bottom of the fifth to seal the 10-0 win.
In all, Wells threw 63 pitches, 45 for strikes, as he faced the minimum of 15 batters.
"It is always good to get a league win to start the season," Flowers said. "I was very pleased with our defensive effort and our pitching effort, and we got the hits when we needed them.
"Quin went out and did what Quin does. He got very few innings last year — about 10 innings — and I expected him to go out, work hard and give a heck of an outing tonight and he did exactly that. I didn't expect anything less from him."
The loss was charged to Ben Miller of FHS, who in 4.2 innings finished with seven strikeouts.
At the plate of the Mustangs, Lynchburg-Clay totaled 10 hits with Elam Faust finishing 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Tanner Roberts was 2-for-3 with two runs, and Harley Lewis finished 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Slack went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
"We hit the ball hard at times, a little inconsistent for my liking, but that will come with more games," Flowers said. "It is a beautiful day to start the season. We didn't have to wear winter coats and we got the win."
The win improves the Mustangs’ record to 1-0 overall and in the SHAC, while Fairfield moves to 0-1 overall and in the SHAC.
