Mustangs take down Green, fall to Fayetteville in recent games

Saturday, Dec. 9 was a game where the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs used their rebounding skills to set the tone and help propel them to a nonconference victory, with the Mustangs defeating the Green Bobcats, 56-53 at LCHS.

Coach Brian Callahan said the Mustangs out-rebounded the Bobcats 30-17, and that was critical in the Mustangs’ effort to gain the win, as he said, “Rebounding won the game for us.”

The Mustangs led 16-10 when the first quarter came to a close, and following a 15-12 second frame in favor of LCHS, it was Lynchburg-Clay leading 31-22 at halftime.

Each team scored 14 points in the third frame, leaving the Mustangs with a 45-36 lead.

Green made a rally in the final frame, outscoring LCHS, 17-11 in the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs fended off the charge and kept the lead for a three-point win.

Denver Clinton led LCHS with 26 points, as he made 10 two-point baskets and he was 6-of-9 from the free-throw line. Clinton also added six rebounds, one assist, three steals and a block.

Austin Bell followed with nine points, sinking four two-point baskets and a free throw. Bell also collected 10 rebounds and three steals.

Cody Bell totaled eight points, as he sank a 3-pointer and made two two-point field goals and a free throw. Cody Bell also collected  five assists, one rebound, one steal and one block.

Asher Faust followed with four points, as he was 4-of-4 from the free-throw line, and he grabbed one rebound.

Cairen Goings totaled four points with five rebounds, one assist and one block.

Josiah Burns totaled three points — all from the free-throw line — and he collected two rebounds and a steal.

Braedon West scored two points and had five rebounds, three assists and one steal.

In all, the Mustangs shot 42.2 percent from the field, and of their 30 rebounds, seven were offensive. LCHS also had 10 assists, nine steals and three blocks as a team. The Mustangs committed 15 turnovers.

On Tuesday, Dec. 12, the Mustangs fell in a Southern Hills Athletic Conference game to the Fayetteville Rockets, 57-46.

It was a tough first half for LCHS, as they trailed 28-12 at halftime, being outscored 11-5 in the first and 17-7 in the second.

The second half was better for LCHS, winning the third frame at 18-9 and losing the fourth quarter at 20-16.

LCHS was led by Jay Cordrey with 14 points, as he made four 3-pointers.

Next was Denver Clinton with 11 points, and Braedon West scored nine points, including two 3-pointers.

Asher Faust totaled six points, Cody Bell scored three points (off a 3-pointer) and Josiah Burns totaled three points.

In all, LCHS totaled seven 3-pointers as a team.

LCHS head coach Brian Callahan said his team played well in the second half, as they fought to overcome a tough first half.

The Mustangs are now 0-3 in the SHAC Division I standings and 1-3 overall.
