Mustangs gain one win in DH against Clinton-Massie; West, Wells combine for a no-hitter

The season opener for the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs for 2025 was Saturday, where they hosted the Clinton-Massie Falcons. LCHS split the doubleheader against the Falcons, where they won game one by a 10-0 score, followed by a 14-11 loss in the second game.

LCHS in the first game pitched a combined no-hitter, as Cole Wells and Braedon West didn’t allow a hit in their time on the mound.

Game one saw the Mustangs win in five innings, where they scored three runs in the bottom of the first, followed by a second inning where they scored another three runs for a 6-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, the Mustangs added two runs, and in the fourth and fifth innings Lynchburg-Clay scored one run apiece for the 10-run win.

On the mound, Cole Wells pitched 4.2 innings for the win, allowing no hits or runs with one walk and nine strikeouts. He also had two HBP and threw 71 pitches, 48 for strikes. West pitched 0.1 inning, allowing no hits, runs or walks on four pitches, three for strikes.

Wells added to his day of pitching with a solid day at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with one run and three RBI, as one of his hits was a double and another hit was a home run.

Cody Bell also had three hits, finishing 3-for-3 with one run and two RBI.

Josiah Burns went 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, while Christian Flowers finished 1-for-3 with one RBI. Also for LCHS, Elam Faust scored one run, West scored three runs and walked three times. Asher Faust finished with one run and one walk.

Elam and Asher Faust were both hit by pitches, and steals were made by Elam Faust, Wells, Burns and West (two).

The second game of the twin bill went to the Falcons by a 14-11 score, where CMHS had 12 hits and committed three errors. LCHS totaled 14 hits and committed two errors.

After neither team scored a run in the first inning, the Falcons tacked on six runs in the top of the second, and LCHS answered with three runs in the bottom of the same inning. The Falcons scored one run in the top of the third, but Lynchburg-Clay had a second straight three-run inning for a 7-6 deficit after three innings.

CMHS scored five runs in the top of the fifth, and for the third time in the game LCHS had a three-run inning, leaving the score 12-9 after five innings. Clinton-Massie scored one run in the top of the sixth, and the Mustangs answered with a two-run bottom of the sixth inning. CMHS added one last run in the top of the seventh inning.

Bell was 3-for-3 with four runs and two walks, and teammate Tanner Roberts finished 3-for-4 with two runs, five RBI and a walk.

Burns was 2-for-4 with a walk, Trevor Niehaus finished 2-for-3 with a run, one RBI and a walk. West at the plate went 2-for-4 with two runs, one RBI and a walk.

The Mustangs also had Quin Wells finish 1-for-4 with a run, two RBI and a walk. Cole Wells was 1-for-4 with a run, two RBI and a walk. Flowers forced one walk.

LCHS finished with six doubles in game two as Bell had two, West had one, and Roberts totaled three. Well also hit a home run for the Mustangs.

Steals were credited to Flowers, Burns, Bell, Niehaus and Quin Wells.

LCHS had three players pitch (Quin Wells, Flowers and West) and they combined for seven innings pitched, allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits and six walks. Quin Wells totaled two strikeouts, and West had four strikeouts.

The Mustangs are 1-1 overall after their Saturday doubleheader, and they are scheduled to play again on Tuesday, April 1 on the road in SHAC action against the North Adams Green Devils at 5 p.m.
