Mustangs’ first inning leads to win over West Union

DODSONVILLE — The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs were able to have all members of their team on the diamond on Tuesday evening. Even though they were the “away team” on their home field against the West Union Dragons, LCHS gained the Southern Hills Athletic Conference win via the run-rule after five innings.
Lynchburg-Clay won by a 28-0 score as 14 players scored a run, 12 players recorded at least one hit, 11 players collected at least one RBI, and eight players forced a walk.
The convincing win started in the top of the first where the Mustangs — who are now 9-0 in the SHAC Division I standings — scored 12 runs to kick things off. From there, the Mustangs mixed up their lineup as 17 players were entered into the game at various times throughout the five-inning contest, as they added eight runs in the top of the fourth and eight more runs in the fifth inning.
In all, the Mustangs collected 20 hits and committed one error. West Union finished with one hit and had five errors.
Three Lynchburg-Clay batters finished with three hits apiece, while two batters had two hits in the win.
All three three-hit batters were 3-for-3, starting with Caden Boone, who also collected three runs and four RBI, as one of his hits was a double.
Cole Wells, to go with his three hits (including a triple), finished with two runs and four RBI.
Quin Wells, in his three-hit day, also scored four runs, collected six RBI and forced two walks.
Christian Flowers ended his day at 2-for-3 with three runs and one RBI. Caden Faust was 2-for-2 with two runs and four RBI.
Josiah Burns finished 1-for-2 with two runs, one RBI and a walk. Braedon West was 1-for-1 with two runs, one RBI and a walk. The Mustangs also had Tanner Roberts go 1-for-1 with two runs, one RBI and one walk.
Trevor Niehaus ended his day at 1-for-1 with one run and a walk. Cody Bell was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Jay Cordrey also had a hi,t as he was 1-for-2 with a run, one RBI and a walk.
The Mustangs also had Kristian Beachy go 1-for-2 with two runs, two RBI and a walk. Elam Faust scored one run for LCHS.
Making his ’25 season debut after recovering from an ACL injury was Austin Bell, and the senior — who missed a majority of the baseball season and all of his basketball season — scored two runs and forced a walk.
Doubles in the game for LCHS were credited to Caden Faust (two), Burns, Roberts and Boone, while Cole Wells hit a triple.
Elam Faust, Caden Faust, Flowers and Boone all were hit by a pitch. Steals were credited to Cole Wells, Flowers, Burns, West and Niehaus.
On the mound, the win went to Flowers, who in three innings allowed no runs on one hit and no walks with five strikeouts. Caden Faust pitched two innings, allowing no run, hits or walks, and he struck out all six batters he faced in his two innings of work.
The win improves the Mustangs to 13-2 overall, and they are still first place in the SHAC Div. I standings with a mark of 10-0.
