Mustangs defeat Peebles in OT; fall at Williamsburg

Playing two games on Friday and Saturday, the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs won on Friday night against Peebles in overtime, 50-46 and lost Saturday to the Williamsburg Wildcats. 

On Friday for the SHAC win, the Mustangs and Indians were tied at 6-6 after the first quarter, and with Peebles winning the second quarter at 10-6, it was PHS leading the Mustangs, 16-12 at halftime. 

The Mustangs scored 16 points in the third, while PHS was held to 11 points, giving LCHS a 28-27 lead after three quarters. 

In the fourth frame, PHS outscored the Mustangs, 10-9, sending the game into overtime. In OT, LCHS outscored the Indians 13-9 for the four-point win. 

LCHS saw Cody Bell and Denver Clinton each lead the team in scoring with 11 points, as Bell had two two-point baskets, a 3-pointer and was 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. 

Clinton totaled five two-point baskets and finished 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. 

Austin Bell scored nine points, making four two-point field goals and was 1-of-1 in his free throw attempts.

Asher Faust finished with seven points, making three baskets from the field, and going 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. 

Also scoring points for LCHS were Josiah Burns (four), Jay Cordrey (four), Braedon West (two) and Cairen Goings (two). 

As a team, the Mustangs made 16 two-point baskets, three 3-pointers, and they finished 9-of-15 from the free-throw line. 

Peebles was led by Carson Reed with 14 points and Gage Grooms with 13 points. 

On Saturday (Dec. 16) the Mustangs lost a non-conference game to Williamsburg, 64-32. 

LCHS trailed 49-13 at halftime with seven points scored in the first and six points in the second frame. WHS scored 24 points in the first quarters and added 25 more points in the second.

The second half saw WHS outscore the Mustangs 10-5 in the third and LCHS win the fourth quarter at 14-5. 

Clinton led LCHS with 17 points, making six two-point baskets, a 3-pointer and was 2-of-4 from the free-throw line. 

The rest of the Mustangs’ scoring included: Josiah Burns (four), Cordrey (three), West (three), Austin Bell (three) and Goings (two). 

Team totals for LCHS included nine two-point baskets, three 3-pointers (Cordrey, West, Clinton), and they were 5-of-7 from the free-throw line. 

Kaleb Brown led Williamsburg with 12 points, and Alex Ervin followed with 10 points.
